Niina Gakushin was the commander of the 17th Corps of the Muhou School.
Appearence
Gakushin is a 16 years old boy with short, spiky black hair and thin eyebrows pointing up. He wears a tunic with long sleeves with the Muhou symbol on them, red hakama pants and a sleeveless coat with a floreal colored pattern on the shoulder area.
Personality
Gakushin is very eager and reckless, ready to serve Jinsuke loyally, seen when he boasted about having captured all the remaining sons of the Daimyo. After the death of Nasu Souun, he became calmer and more mature.
History
At some point in the past he joined the Muhou School and became commander of the 17th Corps.
Plot
Muhou Invasion Arc
He first appears in Unabara Castle, claiming to having captured all the missing sons of the Daimyo.
Juuren Village Arc
Later he was seen with Souun in the abandoned Ogame School doujou, where he and Souun talks about Ranmaru's promotion.
Iori Invasion Arc
During Iori's assault on Unabara Castle he's seen eating, but he doesn't take part to the action.
47 Corps Arc
A year later, Niina attends the meeting with the advisors and commanders, where Jinsuke tells them to crush the Ogame School.
Eastern Gate Arc
He's seen again with his men defending one of the gates to the inner cities, but he's shortly after killed by Gensai's surprise attack.
Abilities
Niina's full abilities are never shown, as he's never seen in action, but since he's a Corps Commander he must be quite skilled. He carries an odd weapon with a slightly curved handle and a straight, double-edged blade, resembling some sort of broadsword, but he's never seen using it.

Trivia
According to the author, originally Gakushin was supposed to be the commander of the first corps and possibly a sort of counterpart to Gama in both age, role and fighting style, but eventually that project was dropped.
