Neferkha

"You may not deserve my help. But they do." - Neferkha, in reference to Bolthorn[1]

Neferkha is the leader of the Medjay Heroes, protecting their lost civilization of sand and the treasures that is theirs from those who wish to steal it from them. As Bolthorn had stolen the Scarab Bracelet, bringing its curse to Heathmoor, Neferkha feels obligated in taking back the Bracelet to save those who do not deserve the curse.

Overview

Calling the Egyptian desert their homes, Neferkha and the Medjay protect the buried treasures of their civilization from any stranger venturing into their lands.[2] All who would call it home fall under his protection, and all who would do harm, he intends to stop.[1]

When his friend Bolthorn stole the Scarab Bracelet from the desert kingdom, Neferkha knew what would happen next. He left his homeland to chase the Raider, following the relic’s trail of waste and death to its heart in Valkenheim. There Neferkha found Bolthorn, a cursed shell of his former self. An epic battle ensued – with Neferkha ultimately besting his friend. Rather than killing the Viking, Neferkha spared his life and removed the Bracelet to lift the curse. Having witnessed the relic’s destruction, Neferkha had realized the jewel belonged to a different time and place; it was simply too dangerous, even for himself, the last heir of the Pharaohs. The Medjay left Valkenheim so it might begin to heal. He became a mercenary to buy his way back home, where he would return the Bracelet to its resting place.[3]

Biography

"A song travels across the sands, across the seas to Heathmoor..."

Neferkha is the last living descendant of the Pharaohs, the line of kings of Egypt.[4]

One night, he followed a single track of footsteps, leading him to a chasm, recently revealed by the shifting sands and ceaseless winds. Upon realizing where this opening led, he hurried inside the ruins of a temple. Having visited the temple once before, he knew how dangerous it was and the treasures that lay inside. Eventually, he caught the intruder, but it was no brigand: he was a proud warrior, a Raider, desperate and curious. Before he fell victim to a deadly trap, Neferkha saved his life.[1][5]

The intruder introduced himself as Bolthorn Raven-Hands, and told Neferkha what he was after. He called himself a Viking, honor-bound to protect his clan. Neferkha urged him to leave, but he was insistent on exploring. Thinking it would be better to supervise him, he offered to act as a guide through the dark temple, to make sure Bolthorn would be escorted out. The Viking showed great interest in the Scarab Bracelet, and Neferkha told him what it was but was also quick to tell him how dangerous it was:[1][6]

"The relic's awesome power was not meant for us mortals. It was to remain buried, undisturbed, forgotten."[1]

Bolthorn understood, and the two men parted as friends.[1] Neferkha watched Bolthorn walk away until his silhouette disappeared over the horizon. He then kept watch over the temple for six nights.[7] It was only after he left that he learned Bolthorn had returned to the temple to steal the relic.[1][7] The other Medjay told Neferkha to leave Bolthorn and his people to their doom, but Neferfkha couldn’t do that in good conscience. What Bolthorn had done was wrong, yes, but what would come next infinitely worse.[8] He thus left for Heathmoor.

As Neferkha traveled towards Heathmoor, he saw the effects of the curse spread throughout the lands. The Medjay continued his lonesome trek surrounded by red waters, rotting soil, carcasses, and the ashes of the dead.[9] Neferkha found Bolthorn in Valkenheim. The Viking, fueled by unnatural, twisted rage, said he had the power of the gods. “The gods have had their time on this plane,” the Medjay replied. “And their chance.”[10]

Neferkha and Bolthorn fought at dawn, until the Medjay emerged victorious. But he did not kill the Raider: instead, he knelt next to him and chanted an incantation that removed all power from the Scarab Bracelet.[11] Once the bracelet was rendered inert, the curse receded, and after a few weeks, its effects were completely gone.[12] The Scarab Bracelet had always been Neferkha’s birthright. The Medjay held out hope that it would one day restore his kingdom. But in his heart of hearts, he believed to use it was the coward's solution.[13] Having witnessed the relic’s destruction, Neferkha had realized the jewel belonged to a different time and place; it was simply too dangerous, even for himself, the last heir of the Pharaohs.[3] With the curse lifted, Neferkha could have gone home. Instead, he chose to remain in Heathmoor, sending word to his fellow Medjay to come join him. This new land, he decided, was in dire need of their help and fortitude.[14] He became a mercenary to buy his way back home, where he would return the Bracelet to its resting place.[3]

Trivia

  • Neferkha's name is likely based on one of the titles for Aspelta, a ruler of the Kingdom of Kush in the 6th century BC. The title meant "whose appearances are beautiful."
