Byzantos is a city-state far to the south of Skandia in the Constant Sea on the main continent. Its name is probably based on the Byzantine Empire, also referred to as the eastern Roman Empire. It was created when the Roman Empire split apart when it was invaded by barbarians from the north and the empire broke apart. Byzantos was created when the Toscan empire became to large for one ruler to rule over, with Byzantos's founding father, Constantus the First, building a new empire in the east. Because it is much newer, Byzantos has much less political corruption than the Toscan Empire and is a far more energetic and exotic source of Trade. Just like the Roman scenario.
The city is well-protected both by a powerful fighting force and the natural waterway defences that protect three sides of city while the thick walls raised by Constantus l defend the other.
Culture
Byzantos has names similar to those of the Byzantine Empire, basically the names are Italian. As said in the beginning of The Caldera Byzantos weaponry is considered exotic in countries so far away from the Constant Sea, like Skandia. Their swords have slightly curved handles, a trait unique to Byzantos swords. Their helmets are spiked in most cases with chainmail trailing down onto the shoulders for added protection. A lot of their gear is made of the same deep red coloured leather. Byzantos laws, traditions, military organization and religion are the same as Toscano’s; however, Byzantos is a much younger country than Toscano and has much less corruption.
Military
Little is known about Byzantos military except that there is a very skilled royal guard for protecting each ruler and their armies organisation is the same as Toscano. Byzantos is also known to be mostly impenetrable because it is surrounded by water on three sides and is protected by thick walls built by its founding emperor.
