Hwa Ling was a female martial artist and weapons expert who was drafted by the Union of Allied Planets to serve in the Unification War. After the war, she worked for Jack Leland as his bodyguard aboard the Aces and Eights. She had familial ties to the 14K Tong through her parents, and Hwa Ling's brother's was killed in a gang fight. The Hip-Sing Tong declared a vendetta against her and actively pursued her.
