Utility Truck/FC

This article appeared in Far Cry

Utility Truck, or Big Truck, is a large vehicle used mainly by Workers to transport cargo on the islands. Due to its bulkiness, it is slow and therefore hard to drive uphill or fit through narrow passages. On the upside, it provides stronger protection against bullets than other vehicles.

Description

Usable

The vehicle has an unusual design for a cargo truck as it features a cab that bends backwards at the front similarly to an armored personnel carrier. There are two seats in a spacious cab which usually lacks doors. The windshield is divided into two panes, for the driver and the passenger.

Due to the high elevation of the truck, it is fitted with sidebars that facilitate access of personnel inside the cab, at the back to climb onto the bed, and onto the middle section where the (apparently) engine is located.

The vehicle moves on eight large wheels. The long bed at the back is where cargo is carried. It consists of four short sides to confine the load and protect it from falling off, the rear one of which is normally unhinged.

The truck is fitted with both front and rear lights, but the latter are unusable.

Unusable

The immobile trucks, which the player cannot use, usually vary from the usable version in that the cab is closed with glazed doors at both sides. In addition, they feature long vertical side mirrors protruding from the middle of the side windows. They also lack the steering wheel. This type of truck can be seen in Pier and Factory.

An exception is the truck in Regulator in the garage of the main building, as it has all the features of a usable truck. Another exception is the mobile uplink truck in River, which lacks the windshield and sports a satellite dish on the bed and a computer attached to the rear.

Appearances

In Pier, a truck with a blown out tyre and cargo blocks the road near the river crossing between the camp and the pier. It is guarded by three mercenaries. The player can destroy the yellow barrel on the truck to easily get rid of the mercs.

In Treehouse, a truck can be used to exit the Supervision area towards the canyon after unlocking the garage door and opening the gate to the helipad.

In Regulator, two workers drive in a truck from the crane area across the pontoon bridge. The player can follow the truck to safely get to the other side by using it as a cover from the enemies ahead. Another truck, though unusable, can be found in the garage of the main building. The player can jump onto the truck's bed by using the wooden crates and pick up a Health Pack and an Assault ammo box.

In Rebellion, it can be found on the road between the solitary tower and the fort ruins. It is defended by a worker against a Fat Boy. It can be acquired before the Fat Boy destroys it.

In River, it serves the mercenaries as a mobile uplink for communication with other bases. Jack uses the mobile uplink to upload information from the retrieved PDA. Before the confrontation with Crowe, Doyle warns that Crowe might try to call in reinforcements via the uplink; however, that never happens.
