A zeta scan, or alignment,[1] is a pseudo-medical procedure carried out by adherents of Hubology, as part of their officiated cult induction. Each progressive scan purports to eliminate exponential "neurodyne" buildup, and once conducted, the subject is awarded with increasing ranks of the aligned Hub seeker role within the organization (AHS for short). An initial scan is mandatory for joining the cult, available to anyone with a healthy constitution, as the Hubologists continually seek to expand their beliefs.[2]

Procedure

Zeta scans are performed ostensibly to allegedly free mankind and unleash its full spiritual potential by purging the "neurodynes" that keep mankind in their oppressive, enslaved state.[3] These neurodynes are alleged to be the psychic centers of the body (similar to a chakra),[4] that have been polluted by the spiritual remnants of those who died in the Great War. Their psi-energies imprint into these centers at one's birth, holding people in an oppressive state,[5] further entrenched by negative psychic energy transmitted from other oppressives within the vicinity.[6] The zeta scans supposedly cleanse and align the neurodynes with what the Hubologists call the Great Wheel.[7] [8]

Zeta scans are performed by a variety of means; The New California Hubologists use an electroshock machine, which runs large doses of electricity through the subject, in which the electricity is claimed to be carefully formulated to drive the negative energies out, cleansing neurodynes and correcting the subject's behavior to be more aligned with the Great Wheel.[1] While it is claimed that the scans are not painful, [9] too many performed within a short period of time are acknowledged to be harmful and even potentially fatal. [7]

Hubologists under Dara Hubbell use a different method, strapping subjects to a chair and blasting their central nervous system with zeta radiation.[10] Raising through the AHS ranks require additional sessions, with even more radiation exposure and subsequent health loss, with the process normally being spread out over a period of years.[11]

The scans are purported to bring a sense of peace and enlightenment,[12] even helping mentally disabled people,[13] allowing for high-level AHS to communicate with even the severely disabled. [14]

While the scans are dubious in nature, the New Californian zeta scans can increase Intelligence and Luck (with a risk of lowering the latter), while Dara Hubbell's methods consistently increase Intelligence at the cost of severe radiation exposure.[15][16][17] Subjects are also commonly known to experience personality loss as well as other complications stemming from blasting their nervous system with extreme amounts of radiation.[18]

Zeta scans are optional, with random stat increases available at the NCR capital or San Francisco. They offer a 50% chance of either giving a stat increase, or reducing it permanently.

  • Enlightened One (NCR): The scan can either raise Luck by +2, or reduce it by -1.
  • AHS-7 (San Francisco): The scan can raise Luck and Intelligence by +1, or reduce Luck by -1.

Fallout 4: Nuka-World

Administered by Phil Roller, zeta scans can progressively provide additional points of Intelligence, up to +8 (dependent on your current AHS level). However, any gains above 10 are temporary.
