The T-60 powered combat infantry armor is an advanced operational model of power armor developed on contract from the U.S. government before the Great War, intended as an upgrade to the original T-45 model. It has appeared multiple times in the Fallout series.
Background
The T-60 series of powered combat infantry armor is an evolution of the T-45 power armor design.[Non-game 1] Following quiet testing between the government and West Tek, as part of its long-standing defense contract,[Non-game 2] the T-60 entered service after the conclusion of the Battle of Anchorage, mere months before the nuclear apocalypse, the T-60 was rapidly deployed and extensively used by the U.S. Army in all theaters. Deployments of military units in T-60 power armor included the domestic front, enforcing order in the nation.[1]
By the time of the Great War it was considered to be the most advanced model of power armor to see extensive use.[2]
Design
As with other power armor models, the T-60 is designed for a single operator. Compared to the T-45, the T-60 is much more heavily armored. The result is an extremely protective armor system. As usual for T-series power armor, the helmet completes the ensemble and includes an air filtration system, a bullet-resistant vision slit, an electric lamp, and external ports that allow the operator to listen to his surroundings and double as attachments points for extensions. The standard upgrade is a drop-down ocular,[3] which can retract to allow for the modular faceplate to open, allowing the operator to see everything directly.[4]
A T-60 power armor unit was usually deployed with support from light infantry units, equipped with energy weapons.[5] After the Great War, T-60 power armor became a rare sight until the reformed Brotherhood of Steel under Elder Arthur Maxson recovered a substantial number of these suits and adopted the T-60 as the service uniform of its soldiers, compatible with Vertibirds and allowing troops to deploy by simply jumping out the door.[6] Competitive falling by soldiers off duty established the practical height for airborne deployments at up to Prydwen's altitude when in hover mode,[7] or about 50 meters (165 ft).[8]
Despite many advantages over its previous models such as the T-51, each armor unit carried over the same fatal flaw from the original T-45 model where a weld below its chestplate made it vulnerable to moderate-to-high caliber armor piercing rounds.
Variants
T-60 basic model

The standard T-60 model typically features dark steel or light blue paint on the majority of the body, with white markings on sections along the inside of the forearms. It was the most advanced model of extensively used power armor before the Great War. By the late 23rd century following the nuclear apocalypse, it became a staple feature of the arsenal for the East Coast chapter of the Brotherhood of Steel under Elder Arthur Maxson.
Tesla T-60 armor

An upgraded variant of the T-60 outfitted with multiple heavy-duty electrodes connected via thick cabling. This variant is utilized by Ivey, the leader of the robotics-obsessed raider gang known as the Rust Devils. The upgrades allow the user's damage output with energy weapons to increase substantially.

- TV series article: T-60 power armor (TV series)
The version of the T-60 power armor seen in the Fallout TV series comes with previously unseen modifications. The most prominent is a rising faceplate that allows face-to-face communication without having to take the helmet off completely, integrated jet boosters allowing for limited flight located within the forearms of the armor (unlike the bulky, back-mounted jet pack mod seen in Fallout 4), as well as an integrated water storage unit on the back.[9] The helmet includes an integrated radio system allowing for long-range two-way communication. The pauldrons of the armor are also outfitted with holes used to anchor cable hooks, allowing for exiting vertibirds mid-flight. The TV series version also depicts the armor's fusion core as able to be removed from its port exclusively using a specialized key instead of by hand at-will, which leaves the armor completely immobile. The armor's occupant is thus unable to leave the suit if the fusion core is removed while they are inside, in contrast to previous installments' depictions of power armor.

- ↑ The Art of Fallout 4 p.13: "Our primary goal with the power armor was to make it feel less like a suit that you'd wear and more like a vehicle you'd operate. this design began as a reimagining of the T-45d, but it was different enough that we dubbed it the T-60. This way we could bring the T-45 back as its own variant. Although the look was settled on early, some details and proportions were revisited when we adapted the power armor to work as a modular system of plates that attached to a standardized endoframe. In this early version, the arms and legs needed more bulk to make room for the operator and the frame."
