Soft drinks are drink items found in Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4 and Fallout 76.

Background

In contrast to hard alcoholic drinks, soft drinks contain no alcohol and are largely made up of water, natural or artificial flavors, and a sweetener such as sugar or fruit juices. Soft drinks may also contain additional ingredients like caffeine, colorings, and preservatives which have kept most drinks fresh for over 200 years after the Great War. Soft drinks could be found on any street corner, either as through restaurants, stores, vending machines, or soda fountains.

By far the most popular brand of soft drink was Nuka-Cola, and it can be found in nearly every corner of the United States of America post-War. Many other brands of soft drink competed with the behemoth brand for market share, with many other companies finding their footholds as regional brands.

Nuka-Cola

Nuka-Cola entered the beverage market in 2044, with the invention of the soft drink by John-Caleb Bradberton after two years of experimentation. Though strictly unhealthy (containing 120% of the recommended daily allowance of sugar), it took the United States market by storm and within a year it could be purchased nationwide. Its popularity rapidly increased, and within several years it was the most popular beverage across the globe.[1][2] The unique taste of Nuka-Cola is the result of a combination of seventeen fruit essences, balanced to enhance the classic cola flavor.[3][4] The balance is precarious and minute adjustments can affect it severely. Such was the case when the freshly launched Nuka-Cola was reformulated in response to the Great Passion Fruit Famine of 2044 and consumers noticed the change in flavor.[5]

Nuka-Cola contains excessive amounts of caffeine and 120% of the recommended daily value of sugar, making it decisively unhealthy for extended consumption.[6] To counter the negative image, it was marketed as being fortified with vitamins, minerals and "health tonics."[7] Intensive consumption can cause Nuka-Cola addiction, which can lead to splitting headaches if Nuka-Cola isn't consumed on a regular basis.[8]

Sunset Sarsaparilla

Main article: Sunset Sarsaparilla

The Sunset Sarsaparilla Company was founded in 1918, since becoming known across the former United States for its sarsaparilla flavored soft drink, advertised as "The Most Popular Beverage in the West!"[9][10][11] By 2077, the soda's popularity had spread nationwide and into Canada, and was still holding strong despite competition from the Nuka-Cola Corporation's Nuka-Cola Wild, an attempt to replicate the soda's flavor and success.[12][13]

Despite the widespread success of the drink, a study was conducted that claimed the soda was hazardous to consumers' health. Publicly broadcasted on television, the study showed that consuming large quantities of the product resulted in a wide range of harmful side effects, including kidney damage, nausea, digital numbness, anxiety, loss of visual acuity, dizziness, occasional nosebleeds, joint inflammation, tooth decay, sore throat, bronchitis, organ rupture and halitosis. The company disputed the claims as unverified but took steps to improve its PR after the story aired in attempt to mitigate any further financial loss.[14]

Vim!

Main article: Vim

Vim! Pop Incorporated was founded in 1931, initially being sold as a health tonic.[15] It wasn't as popular as Nuka-Cola, however in Maine, it was more widely consumed than its rival.[16] Vim was even referred to as a state tradition and about to become the official state drink of Maine; however, during the process of making this official, legal situations forced the company to back off its marketing.[17]

Vim was going to be bought out by the Nuka-Cola Corporation before the war. Doyle Reed, the owner who held the company in his family for years, was fighting against the takeover. However, with certain financial problems being caused by the company's legal issues, the CEO was being urged to sell the company.[18] The only legal entanglement that the public was aware of consisted of a male employee of the Vim! Factory, Alex, allegedly punching a female bar patron,[17] though several witnesses denied this, instead supporting Alex's claim that the female hit him unprovoked and he hit back as a reflex.[19] Still, the local news attached to this story and forced the company to hold back on television advertisements and product release.[20]
