Pendelton was a Brotherhood of Steel soldier in the Citadel.
Background
He had an appendectomy (performed by Sawbones) where a rotary saw was tested out to see how well it would work. Suturing was ineffective in closing his abdomen so they used high-intensity heat to cauterize the cut. The outcome of the operation was a success, though uncomfortable for Pendelton a result, which Sawbones writes off as "irrelevant."[1]
