McGann

General McGann was the leader of the Commonwealth Minutemen in 2240.

Background

McGann was general of the Minutemen, stationed at the Castle when it was taken over by a mirelurk queen.[1] His remains can be found on the way to the armory, where Ronnie Shaw shares that he must have been trapped down here during the attack.[2] Indeed, trapped, he wrote a final terminal entry, sharing that his supplies had run out and that he had no hope of rescue.[3] Having found an old case of wine, he acknowledges that it will make his dehydration worse, but would rather meet his fate with a toast.[3]

Appearances

General McGann appears in Fallout 4 and Fallout Shelter Online.

Behind the scenes

  • McGann uses the standard character model with the skin tone changed rather than appearing as a skeleton or a decomposing body.
  • McGann, as well as a select few other deceased characters, use a unique blue skin tone which is only obtainable to the player character through the use of console commands.
  • General McGann's story along with his corpse in the Castle tunnels is a direct reference to Edgar Allan Poe's The Cask of Amontillado. Furthermore, his body lies next to a wine crate containing some bottles of Amontillado wine. Opposite him is the exhibit of a skeleton behind a half-built brick wall. In addition, the name "Montressor" is on the label of the Amontillado bottles. Montressor is one of the main characters in "The Cask of Amontillado." The name "P. Edgar" in smaller print on the bottom of the label is another reference to Edgar Allen Poe. Poe was inspired to write the story during his time serving at Fort Independence, also known as the Castle.

  2. Ronnie Shaw: "That explains all the landmines. This is, well... was, General McGann. He had your job back when I first joined up. Must have gotten trapped down here when that sea beast attacked the Castle. He did manage to keep the armory secure. I'll give him that much. I guess the uniform is yours now, if you want it. This old geezer doesn't need it any more. Rest in peace, general. Your fight is done and the Minutemen live on. No point in getting all sentimental about something that happened 40 years ago. Come on, we're almost through."
