Math Wrath

You are able to optimize your Pip-Boy's V.A.T.S. logic, reducing all AP costs by 10%.— In-game description

Math Wrath is a perk in Fallout: New Vegas.

Effects

Taking this perk grants a -10% reduction in AP cost for all causes.

Interactions that require the Math Wrath perk

Notes

  • In addition to saving Action Points for each shot fired during a V.A.T.S. session, an added benefit of reduced cost is increased AP regeneration efficiency (each AP regenerated is worth more), as it reduces the time needed to regenerate AP for the next shot by 10%. This allows the player character to make more attacks per turn and reload sooner. A character will take 16.66 seconds to recover their AP bar to full regardless of their AP total unless their AP is modified by perks. AP gained through perks does not count towards the regeneration rate. Because of this, repeatedly using V.A.T.S. mode in combat will allow for landing more shots than normally possible with Action Boy/Action Girl in a given period of time.
  • It is available at level 10, compared to Action Boy/Girl at level 16. These perks complement each other for a V.A.T.S.-oriented character.
  • The perk synergizes well with Grim Reaper's Sprint, as every 20 AP bonus per rank of that perk can be used more efficiently.
  • The perk applies across all weapons and will also stack (multiplicatively) with weapon-centric V.A.T.S. perks like Plasma Spaz or Beautiful Beatdown.

Behind the scenes

  • Grim Reaper's Sprint is similar to this concept, but instead uses Entry Point "Player Kill AP Reward" to restore 20 AP for kills in V.A.T.S.
  • There is an unused actor effect SPEL "PerkMathWrath" that references an otherwise unused base effect MGEF "MathWrathEffect" in the game files, observable through the GECK. These are the editor IDs, but their names are "Math Wrath" and "Regenerate AP" respectively. Based on the PerkMathWrath's use of MathWrathEffect at magnitude 200, at some point of development the Math Wrath perk would have restored 200 AP under some kind of condition.
  • This perk is equivalent to the perk Bonus Rate of Fire from Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel.
