Marley

Be careful out there. Can't afford to replace you yet.

Marley is the supervisor of the Milepost Zero branch of the Blue Ridge Caravan Company in Appalachia in Fallout 76.

Background

Marley is the daughter of Jessica and Theodore; her father used to work as a weapons contractor, while her mother worked for Blue Ridge.[1] Marley's parents devised plans to ride out any potential global conflict in a remote survivalists' shack.[2][3] However, before the bombs dropped, Theodore had taken an opportunity to work at Vault 63 for Hugo Stolz,[4] and was whisked away to the vault against his will and held there permanently. As a result of Theodore's absence, Marley resented him, even as Jessica told her that he had been taken away by Vault-Tec.[5][6]

After the Great War, Marley encouraged her mother, Jessica, to return to Blue Ridge after the company had reorganized itself in the post-apocalypse, with the two of them seeking security as Theodore was still gone.[7] Although Jessica found a living making clothes and trucking along on caravans, she eventually retired from the work due to her declining health; she still stuck around for Marley's sake, but soon died.[8] In Jessica's absence, Joanna Mayfield stepped up as a mentor figure for Marley, showing her how to take care of herself when Jessica could no longer do so. Marley also learned about trading, bartering and running a caravan business from Joanna, becoming her protege in the post-War operation of Blue Ridge.[9]

Around 2105, several members of Blue Ridge were sent south to re-establish trade routes in the Shenandoah region[10] and set up camp at Naked Creek. The caravanners were under the direction of Marley, who was left to run operations while Joanna promised to be in touch soon. The scouts generally thought Marley was "all right," though at least one employee thought she seemed "pretty cold."[11] Many caravanners abandoned the project due to the activation of the Vault 63 weather machine and the subsequent storm wreaking havoc on the region, while many of those who stayed, including the group at Naked Creek, were killed by dangers in the wasteland. With guards and merchants alike in Shenandoah having either run off or ended up dead, Marley's operation was reduced to just herself and Luke. Based at Milepost Zero in the far south, Marley's branch of the caravan business is on the edge of being shuttered by Joanna by the time the Vault 76 dwellers encounter her.[12]

Recently, Marley's father, Theodore, escaped from his captivity in Vault 63 and found his way back to Blue Ridge, confirming his identity by talking about Jessica and Marley. This leads Marley and her father to reunite, if cautiously, at Milepost Zero.[13] At first, she is unsure if he even is her father and if she can believe his claims.[14] Marley eventually comes to recognize that Theodore is telling the truth, and they begin to work towards repairing their relationship.[15]

Notes

Marley must be roughly 28 years old in 2105. She mentions she was born after the Great War, while Theodore was abducted by Hugo before the Great War began. This places her birth year in either 2077 or 2078.

Appearances

Marley appears only in Fallout 76. She was first mentioned in a note introduced in the Skyline Valley update, before making a full appearance with the Milepost Zero update.

Bugs

PCPC Marley gives out the plan for her snow globe after the player has recruited one crew member at Milepost Zero, then asks her to run another caravan. However, after this happens for the first time, her dialogue to give out this plan may play again on subsequent dialogue interactions, resulting in the player receiving another copy of the plan, despite it already being known. There was no known fix for this bug, and the plan could be acquired, essentially, an infinite amount of times. This bug was present on the Public Test Server for Milepost Zero, but was not fixed for its live release. It was reportedly patched with patch 1.7.15.12 (update 55).[patched]

  1. Theodore: "Got offered the tech contractor job. Was working full time. Lived on site. And through that, I met Marley's mum, Jessica. She used to work for Blue Ridge. Long time ago now."
    (Theodore's dialogue)
  2. Marley: "Wasn't born yet. Mom moved to some remote shack out here in the wilderness before dad left, and well, here I am. Glad I got her genes, she was a strong woman dealing with all that by herself."
    (Marley's dialogue)
  3. Theodore: "Had a... had a plan. We were gonna move out to the wilderness. Found a little house. Wasn't much, but would have been enough to avoid the brunt of the bombs and the fallout."
    (Theodore's dialogue)
  4. Theodore: "I worked hard and was good at it. Earned that title. Only quit for more money and better security. Opportunity to work with Vault-Tec, and some big-shot from the board of directors at that. I was just a stupid kid. Didn't know what I was talking about."
    (Theodore's dialogue)
  5. Marley: "Apparently some rich guy took him before the bombs fell, that's why he couldn't be around for my mom. Tripping over his own words to explain himself. I didn't want to hear any of it, truth be told. Anyway, you want to hear more? Talk to him. Not gonna involve myself with it. He's here for a job and that's the end of it."
    (Marley's dialogue)
  6. Marley: "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little intrigued by the Vault... where he's been... all that stuff. Mom did say they took him, so he's gotta be telling the truth. It's just... what do I do with that truth? But, these are my problems. I'll deal with them in my own time and in my own way. Don't let it concern you."
    (Marley's dialogue)
  7. Marley: "Here just to pry? Fine. Let's get it out of the way. Mom used to work for Blue Ridge, back before the war. Ended up back there when I was just a kid. They left a flyer and we followed. Wanted some security, considering dad didn't bother sticking around."
    (Marley's dialogue)
  8. Marley: "Had to convince her to seek them out after the war, but yeah, she worked at Blue Ridge again for a while after we found them. Made some clothes from nothing and sold them on, eventually did some trucking too. She was a real talent. She quit out eventually. It was all a little too much for her. Bombs took their toll, physically and mentally. She chose to stick around though, for me. Anyway, she's gone now."
    (Marley's dialogue)
  9. Marley: "She earned my respect. She's a smart cookie. Taught me all I know about trading, bartering,selling,In-game spelling, punctuation and/or grammar working with clients. Also taught me how to look after myself, when mom couldn't no more."
    (Marley's dialogue)
  10. Marley: "Trade routes used to run through here, back in the old days. Joanna wanted to re-establish that; apparently, it was good business."
    (Marley's dialogue)
  11. Southern route
  12. Marley: "A bunch of them bailed cos of that damn storm... but some stayed. The loyal ones. Not that it did much for them. Most of the remaining guys went out to make a delivery, but it didn't turn out so well... Anyway, with everyone gone, most of the merchants took off too. Ain't nobody wanting to work with a failing spin off when they could just travel a bit further for the real deal back in Big Bend. After that, it was just me and Luke. I'd gather from the suppliers we had left, and he'd make the deliveries. He was a good guy. One of the best."
    (Marley's dialogue)
  13. Marley: "Not till recently. He showed up at Big Bend Tunnel babbling some crap about being taken into a Vault by this rich guy. Joanna was just gonna chuck him out, but he mentioned my mom's name... and a daughter. I'll let you put two and two together."
    (Marley's dialogue)
  14. Marley: "Joanna said he's still at Big Bend, but wants to come to our headquarters. Does some work with guns apparently. She thinks he'd be a good asset here. Says I should give him a chance. I trust the woman with my life, but there's so much to consider here. I mean, shit, how can we even be sure he's my dad? And if he is? Well, he should've stayed in that vault. Least there he would have been outta sight and mind, not groveling at the door of my business."
    (Marley's dialogue)
  15. Vault 76 dweller: "How are things going with Marley?"
Theodore: "Getting there one step at a time. Gonna take a while to patch things up but... it's moving. Can see parts of myself in her. Jessica too... Don't look at me like that. Anyway, did you actually want something? Or just here to waste time?"
    (Theodore's dialogue)
