Chicago

Chicago is a pre-War city located in the former American state of Illinois. It is mentioned multiple times in the Fallout series.

Background

Before the Great War, the detective Nick Valentine, together with his fiancée Jennifer Lands transferred from the Chicago Police to Boston to assist the Boston Police Department in Operation Winter's End seeking to take down local crime boss Eddie Winter.[1]

Following the nuclear apocalypse, the Enclave maintained outposts in Chicago. Sometime before or around 2277, Whitley, a scientist stationed at Adams Air Force Base on the East Coast recorded and stored a message in the eyebot ED-E's data banks before sending him on a cross-country journey to the Enclave installment at Navarro, in which he requested any staff at one of the Chicago outposts to give the unit any repairs it needed.[2] Sometime before 2281, a family of at least three including a young boy named Tommy recovered ED-E after the eyebot had apparently broken down outside Chicago, and after pleading with his father, they brought it back to his mother's garage for repairs.[3] Though Tommy hoped to have ED-E stay with him for longer, the eyebot's programming compelled him to continue to Navarro and he left Chicago soon after being repaired to working order again.

At some point, the Brotherhood of Steel dispatched a fleet of zeppelins to hunt down super mutants in the Midwest, most of which were destroyed. One of these airships crash landed near the ruins of Chicago, and established a new chapter in the area.[4][Non-game 1][5] For reasons unknown, this new chapter eventually went rogue and severed contact with the rest of the Brotherhood.[6][7]

Another expedition was sent east by the Brotherhood of Steel in 2254, with the former American capital of Washington, D.C. as their destination. Though their secondary objective was to restore contact with the Chicago chapter, they failed to do so, leaving the fate of the chapter uncertain.[Non-game 1]

Until recently I was in charge of the Duraframe reinforcement project for the combat model Eyebots. Eyebot Duraframe Subject E is both the prototype, and the last functional model in this test group. I was prepared to make several significant upgrades to the machines. However, as the project was canceled and all Duraframe assets are being diverted to Hellfire Armor, I am sending this model to the Navarro outpost. If you are listening to this log from one of our Enclave Outposts in Chicago, give this unit whatever repairs it needs so it can continue to Navarro."

    ED-E: Wistful beeping
The Courier: "Where did this happen?"
    ED-E: Happy beeping
The Courier: "Illinois? So that's where you got that plate. The other you, I mean."
    ED-E: Happy beeping
    The Courier: "What's a Chicago?"
    ED-E: Expository beeping

  4. The Lone Wanderer: "Care to share anything about the Super Mutants?"
Elizabeth Jameson: "The Brotherhood has been battling Super Mutants for decades. First out West, then in Chicago. Now here. But this group of Super Mutants is different, somehow. Physically, yes, but mentally as well. If we knew where they came from, we'd know why."
    (Elizabeth Jameson's dialogue)
  5. Brotherhood soldier (1): "I still can't believe I was posted to the Prydwen. I mean, look at her... she's one of a kind."
Brotherhood soldier (2): "Actually, the Brotherhood of Steel had a whole fleet of these things at one time. They weren't as advanced as the Prydwen, mind you... but seeing them fill the sky must have been an impressive sight."
Brotherhood soldier (1): "Are you kidding me? What happened to them?"
Brotherhood soldier (2): "Not sure, really. Most of them were destroyed fighting Super Mutants or scuttled for parts. I think one of them crash landed somewhere in the Midwest. I heard that the wreckage is still there."
Brotherhood soldier (1): "Wow... I had no idea."

  6. The Sole Survivor: "Did the Brotherhood ever build other airships?"
Kells: "There were less advanced versions of this ship built on the West Coast a long time ago. Historical records about their current status are in dispute, but we're fairly certain that they were destroyed. In any event, I hope your tour of the Prydwen helped acclimate you to our way of life up here. I think you'll find that the more familiar you become with both her capabilities and her crew, the longer you'll survive as a member of the Brotherhood. You're dismissed, Knight/Paladin/Sentinel."
    (Kells' dialogue)
  7. The Lone Wanderer: "Then where's the rest of the Brotherhood?"
Reginald Rothchild: "The West Coast, unless something has changed. There's been no contact with them for the last several years. There's also a small detachment in Chicago, but they're off the radar. Gone rogue. Long story."
    (Reginald Rothchild's dialogue)

  9. Shawn's journal: "John and I are sick of hearing Lowell talk about Chicago all the damn time. Lowell wants us to pack up and head that way. Who gives a shit about Chicago? I always thought we should travel more south to see if any of our cousins survived."

  1. 1.0 1.1 Fallout 3 Official Game Guide Game of the Year Edition p.71: "Elder Owyn Lyons
Lyons, 75, was already highly decorated when he set out from the order's West Coast headquarters, leading a party of soldiers on a mission to reestablish contact with the 'Eastern Brotherhood.' He discovered this abandoned Pentagon military complex. The presence of Super Mutants sent a chill up the collective spine of the Brotherhood; these weren't the children of the dreaded Master, nor were they the remnants of the band that fled east and were ultimately destroyed (or assimilated into the Brotherhood of Steel) in the Chicago area. No, this was a new breed of Super Mutant, one with a local origin. But where did they come from? What did they want? How were they reproducing? Elder Lyons was ordered to discover the source of this new Super Mutant infestation and wipe it from the face of the earth. Recent weeks have seen him galvanize his 'Pride' to thwart the remnants of the Enclave forces, and to provide drinking water to all."
