Fairies (妖精 Yōsei) are a mythical race on Earth Land.
Appearance
Fairies are depicted as miniature humanoids with pointy elf-like ears and 4 wings on their back, their bodies emitting a glittery golden glow.[1]
Description
Fairies are mysterious creatures even to the people of Earth Land, having spawned various legends, myths and speculations about them, leaving their existence within the world rather ambiguous and inconclusive. Mavis Vermillion' parents even once told her that Fairies only come to children who don’t cry.[2]
Mavis also pondered on the idea if Fairies have tails, that is if they even exist, referring to it as an eternal mystery, and an eternal adventure should one attempt to find out. This was also the inspiration for the creation of her guild Fairy Tail.[3]
Users of Fairy Magic take on qualities similar to that of Fairies.[4]
Trivia
- While depictions of seemingly real Fairies have been shown in the series, they remain unnoticed by the public, leaving it unclear if these are canonically real or just a spectacle for the audience.
- Zera, a human who once died almost a century prior, somehow reappears in the finale of the original series as Fairy saying farewell to the audience. How this occurred is unknown, suggesting a possible reincarnation, only adding further mystery to their existence.
- Legends also imply there being various types of Fairies that some have used their names as titles and monikers. Zeref took on the alias Spriggan, which referred to a “grotesque Fairy”. Natsu Dragneel’s moniker; Salamander is also based on a fiery Fairy-like creature.
