The Abbot was the leader of the Temple of Light during the enlightenment age of Albion.
Story
The Abbot had adopted a young girl named Hannah and brought her to the Temple of Light. Unknown to those in the temple, this girl had the lineage of a strong hero, being rather tall and possessing great strength. The Abbot prepared for The Golden Oak Ritual, held when the Golden Oak of Oakfield produces a single golden acorn and then dies after a few decades. The ancient text believed by the monks stated that only two monks might enter the Wellspring Cave and collect the holy water for the Golden Oak. The Abbot decides to break this rule and instead sends one monk to the cave with a recruited protector. The monks of the Temple of Light are pacifists and, therefore, cannot fight. The Abbot chose Sister Hannah as the monk and recruited The Hero of Bower Lake as her protector.
Lucien Fairfax soon discovers that Sister Hannah is a descendant of the Heroes of Old and sends one of his soldiers to abduct her. After collecting the holy water, Sister Hannah is alerted of The Abbot held at gunpoint in the temple. Unfortunately, Hannah's pledge of pacificism caused her to resist, allowing the Abbot to be shot and killed. Hannah finally broke her oath, killing the soldier and avenging The Abbot's death.
The Abbot was buried up a hill in Oakfield, away from the actual graveyard, and the Golden Oak acorn is planted in his grave. Later, upon returning from the Spire, the grave site will appear different. If the hero defended the Light, the tree would flourish, while if they massacred Oakfield, the tree will be destroyed.
Replacement
A new Abbot, later in the game, takes over from Hammer's father, after his murder. He is met during the quest known as Defender of the Light. His associate, Timothy Lightjoy, can be found inside the temple.
Trivia
- If you stand on the grave mound after the ceremony is finished, there is a growl or yell that can be heard.
- When he talks to you about the quest, The Ritual, it doesn't affect him whether you are good or evil. He will still assign you to escort Sister Hannah.
- There was a bug in the game where if players went to the Abbot, but then walk away, they would not be able to carry on with the game. This bug, however, was fixed in the January 2009 patch.
