Uranus

Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun and one of the outer gas planets. Its largest moon, Titania, has a human settlement with approximately five thousand inhabitants, the farthest outpost of human civilization as of the events of Leviathan Wakes.

Overview

It is a gaseous cyan-colored ice giant. Most of the planet is made of water, ammonia, and methane in a supercritical phase of matter, which astronomy calls "ice" or volatiles. The planet's atmosphere has a complex layered cloud structure and has the lowest minimum temperature (49 K (−224 °C; −371 °F)) of all the Sol system's planets. It has a marked axial tilt of 82.23° with a retrograde rotation period of 17 hours and 14 minutes. This means that in an 84-Earth-year orbital period around the Sun, its poles get around 42 years of continuous sunlight, followed by 42 years of continuous darkness.

Moons

As of 2024, Uranus is known to have 13 inner moons, whose orbits all lie inside that of Miranda.

Inner moons
  • Cordelia and Ophelia
  • Portia group: Bianca, Cressida, Desdemona, Juliet, Portia, Rosalind
  • Belinda group: Cupid, Belinda, and Perdita
  • Puck and Mab
Large moons

The 5 middle moons are the largest.

  • Miranda
  • Ariel
  • Umbriel
  • Titania
  • Oberon
Irregular moons

Shapes are largely unknown and orbits are elliptic.

  • Stephano and Francisco
  • Caliban
  • Trinculo, Margaret, Prospero, Setebos, and Ferdinand
  • Sycorax (orbit is irrecular inside Francisco and outside Trinculo/Stephano)

History

The Ring

The Ring is located in Uranus's orbit, although it is stationary relative to the Sun and does not orbit.

Trivia

  • Uranus is one of the early gods who personified the sky and is the father of the Titans
