Riley

"I see it in you... What is mine..." ― Riley

Riley, also known as God Riley, is a small yellow toad whom serves as the player's primary companion throughout most of Everhood 2. Riley serves as one of Everhood 2's primary antagonist, though they hide their malicious intentions until the end of the story.

Characteristics

Appearance

Riley is a small yellow toad with a cute, albeit simple veneer they wear throughout most of Everhood 2. Riley wears a simple blue coat and nothing else, for God Riley, they wear a robe of the same blue color along with brown boots and a simple crown. Corrupted Riley/God Riley has a vastly different appearance, in the portraits of God Riley, they are covered in warts and wrinkles. God Riley has black eye balls with blue/red pupils that vary from normal Riley's simple white eyes with black pupils.

Personality

Riley, before becoming God, is a kind-hearted and simple individual, often asking the player if they are okay after a tough battle or event (Chaos room, ect.). Riley is powerless and does not possess any power for most of the game, only showing their limited powers before Bobo's final battle by enabling health regeneration. Riley's primary goal is to reach the Boat Man and later aspires to become God, Riley mentions their mission to find the Boat Man first when being cornered by a Hyena and a Mutant Shark in Year 0. After the End of Time/Black Hole battle, Riley suddenly becomes more strict and impatient, likely in a rush to become God. Once Shade offers Riley to become God, Riley accepts and becomes God Riley. God Riley (compared to ordinary Riley) is a cruel, murderous, power hungry, strict, and wicked individual. God Riley's behavior is likely influenced by being possessed by Shade.

Battle

God Riley

First loop

God Riley is the Final Boss of Everhood 2 (not counting Shade Post-Credits Battle) and as such is one of the hardest battles in Everhood 2, with a massive health of 8888HP (Both vanilla and Colosseum). God Riley's health can be rejuvenated after the song loops, similarly to some of the data enemies. God Riley is weak to Red Notes, though the battle itself uses them rarely (Not counting Rainbow Notes). The Battle begins with God Riley saying that they see something in the player, and then stating they want what belongs to them(Riley). God Riley then uses slime-like hands to smash the floor, before opening their mouth to reveal Shade inside the darkness. God Riley swaps between having Shade in their mouth, to having their organs instead throughout the battle. God Riley then levitates and begins shooting out Speedy notes in a sort of mystified state. Shade appears in Riley's mouth once again and begins sending Pink notes out and taunts the player, telling them to dance for their life. Shade then tells the player that they are "The abyss" before looping back to the beginning of the song transitioned by an onslaught of black notes.

Second Loop

The second loop for God Riley is identical in terms of note charting, and does not possess unique properties like in Juice Master No. 4671's battle. The only change is within the dialog, during the speedy note section, God Riley remarks "You will succumb to me!". During the Shade section of the fight, Shade states that the player cannot defeat them, and says that they(Shade) will just rejuvenate Riley's health.

Third Loop

The third loop is the last loop with any notable changes, after the third loop plays out, it will just repeat back to the first loop again. During the speedy note section of the fight, God Riley simply shouts "Give up already!". During the Shade portion of the fight, their dialog is heavily reduced, only remarking one of their catchphrases "All is vanity".

Ending

After God Riley is defeated, they begin to make balloon squeals before exploding into a yellow pile of goop, killing them.

Story

Riley is first encountered in either Neon City or Year 0 (depending on the choices made for the short quiz when starting a new save file). In the Neon City, Riley simply sits on a table in the Level 10,000 Club near Sam, they serve no purpose here however.

Riley serves a minor role in Year 0, only being rescued from a Mutant Shark and a Hyena and entering the player's Inventory.

Riley shortly leaves the player's Inventory and enters the Dragons mirror room, after the Dragon is defeated, Riley will re-enter the player's inventory once again.

Riley accompanies the player throughout most of the story, often giving advice or their input on the situation at hand, though does not play an important role in speaking. Notably, Riley leaves the player in the Chaos Room and states that they have to find someone to help them. Riley has a heartfelt reunion with the player after defeating Cazok and making their way back up to the Hilbert Hotel lobby, in which Riley states that they were worried sick about the player and states that they are glad that the player is okay.

Before battling Bobo for the second time, Riley reactivates the player's health regeneration before being knocked aside by Bobo.

After the End of time battle, Riley starts to sweat and begrudgingly and abruptly leaves the player and stands outside the Cat God Door and tells the player to use their other Soul-Weapons to unlock the door. After entering, the player is greeted by Shade, who asks the player if they wish to become God. The player can say either yes or no, but neither have an impact on the dialog or story, as Shade states it is impossible for the player to become God because they already are. Shade then offers Riley the position of God and Riley happily accepts. Before even finishing the sentence accepting the wish, Riley is heavily corrupted and begins to slur their words before becoming God Riley.

The player awakes in Neon City, now dubbed "Riley Town" and is only allowed to enter a dilapidated Hilbert Hotel. Once entered, Irvine greets the player and tells them that Riley has taken over and that they must rescue Sam from Riley's Fortress. Once inside Riley's Fortress, Riley is found atop a crimson throne with Sam next to them in a cage. Riley is shocked to see that the player is alive and furiously kills everyone within the throne room besides the player, Irvine, and Sam. Riley then sends out Rainbow Harpies to defend them while they bask on their crimson throne, once the player reaches Riley, they send Evren as a last ditch effort to kill the player.

Once Evren is defeated, the player wakes up to Lucy, who states that they are tired of Riley's command and will help the player in killing them for good. Lucy becomes a staircase leading to Riley's Hideout. Once the player enters the hideout, Raven is seen speaking with Riley, demanding that Riley stop their wrathful crusade before being crushed into a purple pile of goop by Riley. Riley is once again shocked to see that the player is alive, and says that Raven deserved it, and ask the player if they wish to join Riley in ruling. The player can say either yes or no, however neither result in a different outcome. If the player accepts, Riley calls them stupid, stating that they were kidding and have no interest in working with the player and then initiates the God Riley battle. If the player refuses, Riley states that they aspected as such before initiating the God Riley battle. After the battle, Riley explodes into a yellow pile of goo and dies.

Trivia
