Tony

Tony (トニー Tonī ) is a character in EarthBound. He is Jeff' best friend and roommate. He joins Jeff's party during the period of the game the player first controls Jeff (said to be the day before Tony's birthday party) and gives Jeff the boost needed to jump the fence of Snow Wood Boarding School. Shortly after the player makes a reservation for Club Stoic, he asks the player for their name, then calls to confirm it later after being rescued from the Stonehenge base. This information comes into play when the player prays to defeat Giygas. While defeating Giygas with Prayer, one of the scenes involve Tony calling his schoolmates and Maxwell, asking them to pray for Jeff and his friends.

At the end of the game, while Maxwell gets a call from Jeff, Tony tells Ness that Jeff did not call him at all, thinking if it is due to claiming Tony as annoying. He then asks Ness to make Jeff call him.

Trivia

• When Ness gives the Letter from Tony item to Jeff, he states that Tony has a "heart of gold" while not complaining that Ness opened the letter.
• By hacking Tony to be in your party and encountering an enemy, Tony can attack dealing a small amount of damage.
• It was stated in an interview with Itoi that one of the characters in EarthBound is gay,^[1] and this character was later confirmed to be Tony, along with him being in love with Jeff, by Marcus Lindblom in an interview.^[2]
