The Star Jewel Project was an investment project that was undertaken immediately prior to the death of Leto Atreides II.
The investment in Star Jewels was funded by at least five Great Houses through CHOAM, and the Bene Gesserit acted as bargainers and advisors for the project, for a fee.
The Star Jewel investment project was profitable for all concerned. The Bene Gesserit used their profits to offset losses in an investment on Giedi Prime during this time, while five of the Great Houses involved used their profits from the venture to maintain House Minor status after experiencing severe economic hardship. Indeed, investment in the Star Jewel project appeared to save those Houses from total collapse, a fate more than 31 Great Houses experienced during the latter half of Leto II's reign.
