Jules Corrino (born Jules Butler; 98 BG - 17 BG) was the second Emperor of the Corrino Empire.
Biography
Jules was born the son of General Faykan Butler and his wife Jessica Boro-Ginjo during the period of initial recovery from the Butlerian Jihad in 98 BG, when the thinking machines still had a stronghold on Corrin and the cymeks remained alive and well on Hessra. In 88 BG, after the cymeks were destroyed and Corrin besieged by the League of Nobles under his father Faykan as Viceroy, Faykan renamed himself Corrino and declared himself the first Emperor, making his son Jules Corrino and the heir to the throne. In his early life he was described as "handsome young man, aggressive and charismatic".
Upon Jules' ascension to the throne after Faykan's death in 78 BG, he soon amended the vital agreement that had been made between the League and VenKee Enterprises during the Jihad to "allow competition" to the new company Venport Holdings, enraging Directeur Adrien Venport by breaking his monpoly on space travel in particular that had existed since 108 BG. He married Orenna Corrino and had two sons, Salvador Corrino in 52 BG and Roderick Corrino in 50 BG, the future third and fourth Emperors respectively, and a daughter, Anna, in 26 BG, all with different mothers, none of whom were his actual wife. Salvador's mother in particular was been emotionally unbalanced and tried to kill Emperor Jules when he decided to end her service as his concubine. In contrast, Roderick's mother was "not only lovely, but highly intelligent". Anna's mother was Bridgit.
His reign also saw the growth of the Great Schools to replace the skills that had been performed by thinking machines before the Jihad, namely with the increasing expansion of Raquella Berto-Anirul's Sisterhood on Rossak, the establishment of the Order of Mentats on Lampadas in 68 BG and the construction of Mohandas Suk's new Suk Medical School base on Salusa Secundus. One of these Suk doctors diagnosed him with a brain tumour in 28 BG after being tormented with chronic migraines, but he refused to submit to high-tech medical procedures, despite the protestations of his son Roderick. Jules subsequentally oversaw the controversial compilation of the Orange Catholic Bible beginning in 32 BG.
After the latter, the violence response to the release of the OCB by the C.E.T. in 25 BG surprised Jules, and three years into the riots, after several delegates had already been murdered, the endangered compilator Toure Bomoko rushed to Salusa Secundus with his party of refugees and begged the Emperor for sanctuary and protection, which he granted. However, when the Emperor attempted to address a bloodthirsty mob in Zimia, the appearance did not go well, and, for his own safety, he was forced to retreat with his guards. Tensions remained high for more than a month. Bomoko and the Empress subsequentally entered into a relationship and Jules ordered the violent execution of all 35 of the delegates and forced his children to watch the horrific executions, though Toure somehow managed to escape and hid on Tupile with the help of thew new Directeur of VenHold, Josef Venport, who saw a profit incentive and carried on his father's grudge against Jules and the throne. Though helpless innocents were continually murdered by the mob on suspicion of being Bomoko, Jules mainly managed to quell the C.E.T. riots.
Towards the end of his rule, the Butlerian movement also began to regain prominence, including an occupation of Tlulax in 20 BG, under Manford Torondo, who Jules publicly supported, one factor behind his rejection of sophisticated medicine and the Suk School. In this period the Emperor struggled to keep his government from tearing itself apart, while he also had to deal with minor unrest in the former Unallied Planets. Jules died in 17 BG and was succeeded by his son Salvador as Emperor.
