- "It is by the will alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the juice of Sapho that thoughts acquire speed, the lips acquire stains, the stains become a warning. It is by the will alone I set my mind in motion."
- ―Hayt recites the Mentat Mantra[src]
In Dune 2000 Hayt De Vries was a Mentat in the employ of House Harkonnen who replaced Radnor as Master of Assassins. He was a Ghola of a previous, unnamed Mentat.
Biography
After drinking the juice of Sapho he discovered a Commander in his office. Noting that they were new to Giedi Prime as they lacked a Heart plug. He instructed the Commander to take some Harkonnens and mine melange on Arrakis, executing anyone who tried to stop them. Not waiting for a reply, Hayt turned and resumed consuming Sapho. After the Commander returned, he informed them that the Atreides had attacked their mining camp in the Imperial Basin. Not wishing to break news of a defeat to the Baron, he asked the Commander to handle it swiftly. After torturing information out of an Atreides conscript, Hayt discovered a poorly defended Atreides base, ordering the stranger to attack before they can fortify themselves. While informing the Baron of the current situation, he ordered the Commander to attack the mountain at dawn, destroying the hidden Fremen base. After Spacing Guild Heighliners began to orbit Arrakis with Sardaukar with the Padishah Emperor Frederick IV. Hayt ordered the Commander to protect the last radar outpost, preventing the Emperor from landing. When the stranger succeeded Hayt complimented their fighting skills, telling them that Harkonnen spies have received information that the House Ordos are falling back. The Harkonnens later captured Noree Moneo, discovering an Atreides factory that produced Carryalls, intended to carry the Sardaukar into battle. Hayt asked the Commander to attack the Atreides factory before the Sardaukar can arrive. Missions later, Hayt informed the Commander that the Baron is offering them a ransom of spice, should they be successful in defeating the Sardaukar with the Death Hand.
In Emperor: Battle for Dune he is replaced by Mentat Yanich Kobal. His fate at this point is unclear.
Trivia
- The actor who plays Hayt De Vries (Robert Carin) is made up to look like actor Brad Dourif's portrayal of Piter de Vries in the 1984 film Dune. This could be a reference that Hayt is a ghola of Piter de Vries.
- Robert Carin also acted in the game Another World and television show As the World Turns[1]
- Hayt uses exaggerated hand movements in a cutscene, extremely similar to the ones Piter uses in the '84 film when instructing Nefud. Additionally he recites the Mentat Mantra in the first cutscene as Piter does, however he says 'It is by the will alone' rather than 'will alone'
- The first name Hayt is also an allusion to Hayt, the ghola of Duncan Idaho.
