A Glowglobe is a suspensor-buoyed organically phosphorescent light source device. They were invented in 4266 AG by F.M. Aubec. The most famous manufacturer of Glowglobes is the House Lucifera of Gollimar, having produced 38 billion Glowglobes in the years prior to the writing of the Encyclopedia entry. House Lucifera is the only House that has been able to grow the Bacteria of the Globes in labs, meaning they can produce significantly more than their competitors.
The are comprised of 3 major parts: Veillonella methanomonas ecazi, the base which provides the methane that feeds on the other bacteria and scavenges the waste products; The Actinomyces lucifer ecazi, the phosphorescent component and the Serpens electri ecazi which provides the power for the generator. The Actinomyces lucifer ecazi is a sensitive thermotrop, meaning it will glow brighter on the side facing the nearest heat source, leading to the Glowglobes most common use as a floating illumination device for intelligent beings. Some, typically those with wealth, use an alternative Glowglobe which contains a Spheroporus electri ecazi, a bacteria similar to Serpens electri ecazi, which powers the generator. When microswitches are sent to the interior of this Glowglobe, the bacteria causes the repulsor field to seek the optimal temperature gradient, meaning the Glowglobe will automatically seek the optimal distance from the heart source target. These Glowglobes come with the downside of being more difficult to transport and more expensive. The Globes are able to be extinguished with a touch.
