M.E.L., short for Master Electronic Leader is a minor DuckTales 1987 character appearing in the episode "Money to Burn". He stutters when he talks and whenever he speaks, his voice tone changes pitches.
History
M.E.L. is the effective dictator of a technologically advanced planet where the inhabitants are robots. His sensors saw a large supply of metal on Earth and ordered his forces to steal it. That supply of metal happened to be the money bin of Scrooge McDuck, who at the time had been in a fight with Ma Beagle and the Beagle Boys over possession of the bin. The fight was broken up by one of M.E.L's vessels, which frightened the Beagles and used a ray to take the money bin aboard. Scrooge found an old spaceship, which he tracked to the robot planet, taking with him Gizmoduck and Launchpad to pilot the ship.
Once on the planet, Scrooge and Launchpad are immediately detected when they set foot in the alien city where a message from M.E.L. appears on a widescreen saying "There are non-robotic units detected in the vicinity. These inferior beings must be destroyed. Have a nice day." Gizmoduck takes advantage of his appearance to infiltrate the city, finding disguises for Launchpad and Scrooge as well as learning the intent of what M.E.L. will do to the money bin. When Gizmoduck stops the melting of the money bin, robot soldiers defeat him and take Gizmoduck and Scrooge to M.E.L.. Fenton Crackshell bests the Master Electronic Leader, an alien supercomputer, in a counting contest. While M.E.L. is reeling from its defeat, Fenton grabs a jar and asks the computer how many bolts are in it. When it answers a number in the hundreds, he points out the jar is full of nuts, not bolts, so the correct answer was zero. M.E.L. had earlier boasted to Fenton that it was the smartest computer in the universe, and falling for such a simple trick question makes M.E.L. explode.
