Drawga

Drawga is a narrative drawing series inspired by Dungeons & Dragons. Season 2 onward contained a plot entirely made by the DM (Drawing Master) Caldwell Tanner, and starred Nathan Yaffe, Jacob Andrews, and Julia Lepetit as their player characters, the Ladies Book Club.

Season 1 of Drawga began as an experimental choose-your-own adventure game guided by audience votes on decisions established at the ends of episodes, and is unrelated to any following content.

History

Season 1

In an episode of Drawfee Break released on Jan 21, 2015, titled Choose Your Own Adventure 1, Caldwell had the idea to create a viewer-guided choose-your-own-adventure narrative in the spirit of Drawfee's typical call for drawing suggestions at the end of each episode. In this first episode, Caldwell and Nathan set up three choices, between entering a tote bag, trying to leave a door, or entering a portal in the wall, from there, each episode continued the story as a result of the viewers' choice and set up another decision to be voted on for next time.

This was spun off into its own series, titled Drawga, a combination of "Draw" and "Saga", which went on for 11 total episodes, including the original Drawfee Break episode.

The season saw the audience entering an Onion dimension, visiting the Carrot Kingdom, awakening a Goat Golem, and having multiple rap battles. At the end of the series, you and an ally entered a portal to take down The Devourer, an all-consuming goat demon, who you challenged to an eating competition, and, after defeating him, you became the devourer.

Season 2

Six months after the end of Drawga, Caldwell, Julia, Nathan, and Jacob created new Dungeons & Dragons characters as part of the same adventuring party, the Ladies Book Club, over two separate episodes of Drawfee Break. In the first, Caldwell created Tiffany, a Southern religious dwarf cleric, and Julia created Rah'ōxah, a stoic eladrin fighter with a boyfriend named Demon Johnny.

In the second, Nathan created Legzi Shortstakk, a halfling rogue who fights via mannequin leg based deception, and Jacob created Ryjinah, a vane tiefling warlock with a living staff named Johnathan the Bone Staff that always tells terrible puns.

Season 2 of Drawga, officially titled Drawga: Dungeons & Drawfee, began a few months later in January 2016, as a complete departure from the format of Season 1. It took place in an entirely different universe from Season 1. Additionally, rather than a choose-your-own-adventure narrative, this season was Drawfee's take on Dungeons & Dragons. Caldwell served as the dungeon master, while Jacob, Julia, and Nathan were the players, specifically reusing and redesigning their characters made in the D&D episodes of Drawfee Break.

Every episode, Caldwell told a bit of story which ended with a problem or task. The players then had to each draw their characters' response to that situation, and a poll, voted on by viewers, would decide who had the best idea at the beginning of the next episode. Most characters in Drawga Season 2 were based on previously established characters from regular Drawfee episodes. Such as Francis and his search for his cousin Daryl originating from the Drawfee Break episode Comic Strip, or the Pear Bear, originating from the Morning Drawfee episode Grizzly Pears.

This series ended up being very intensive to create on account of the sheer number of drawings, animations, and length of episodes, leading to the fifteen-episode season only finishing just under four years later, on December 12, 2019, with over a year's gap between episodes 11 and 12. They were only able to finish the series at that time because Drawfee had hired a dedicated editor for the channel, David Clarke.

Despite the sparse upload schedule, this series gained a very dedicated fanbase, with Drawga becoming the most popular and beloved series on the channel.

The season followed the Ladies Book Club, three roommates at Adventure College, who attempt to find adventuring work due to being low on money. They are approached at a bar by a man named Francis, who leads them down a series of increasingly dangerous jobs, and even faking a murder in order to see if they were worthy to take down Porfo, the Devourer, who turns out to be a vessel for the destroyer of worlds, Erasus the Undoing. They ultimately defeat him by showing him the value the universe and friendship.

Ladies Book Club

Ladies Book Club was a comic released throughout 2018 and possibly 2019 during Season 2's run, with the first issue debuting physically at MoCCA Fest 2018, and all other issues releasing digitally later on. It was written by Jacob, Julia, and Tony Wilson, with the artist of every issue being a new woman artist for each. It took place prior to Season 2, as Legzi fails to get into college with her high school friends, Ryjinah and Rah'ōxah, as they run away together.

Their fathers, worried about their children, along with Legzi's father who doesn't want Legzi to go to college at all, begin chasing after them. By the end of their road trip, Legzi and Ryjinah begin fighting, destroying things around them, and use Rah'ōxah as collateral in their argument, so Rah'ōxah decides to leave the group. Legzi realizes how terribly she had been acting and the three reunite. Legzi admits that she was never accepted into college, her father comes to understand her want to go to college, and they use nepotism to fenagle Legzi into the university.

Season 3

A third season of Drawga was filmed the week of July 7, 2019, for Dropout in Los Angeles with a large amount of the series being shot in live-action. Similar to Season 2, Caldwell acted as a DM with Nathan, Jacob, and Julia as players. In nearly every episode, a guest, typically from CollegeHumor's L.A. office, plays a character that presents a problems for the Ladies Book Club to solve and judges who had the best solution. Additionally, there was no audience interaction whatsoever.

The large separation between this season's format and the previous season's, as well as Season 2's story being irrelevant to the new season, led to it being categorized as an entirely different series from the previous two seasons. The first two seasons were grouped together as Drawga: The Web-Series, while the third season was categorized under the series Drawga.

Despite the third season only ever being officially referred to as its own series, Dropout's Drawga series is nearly always referred to as Season 3 by the fanbase, as it was a continuation of the Ladies Book Club after having graduated from college. It is also referred to as "Dropout Drawga" or "the Dropout season", and variations thereof.

Episodes of Season 3 were posted weekly on Dropout, starting on December 6, 2019, with a YouTube version uploaded one week later. However, due to Drawfee's layoff from CollegeHumor in January 2020, only the first five episodes were able to release on YouTube at first. At the end of 2020, every episode was released, one episode per weekday, starting on December 23rd. Additionally, each episode was entirely uncensored from its original release.

The season followed Legzi, Ryjinah, and Rah'ōxah trying to find work fresh out of college, focusing on a ridesharing-style app for adventurers named Questly. After becoming verified users of Questly, they learn that the app is secretly a scheme to funnel pure souls to Allhands, a demon who sells souls for profit. They travelled to the city frozen over by a dragon, Porfopolis, to enter a portal and defeat Allhands. He traps the Ladies Book Club in perfect worlds, but ones in which they had never met, but they feel such a strong love for one another that they each return to reality, and, together, defeat Allhands for good.

Ladies Book Club is a comic series featuring the same characters from Drawga Season 2 and 3. The first issue was released physically at MoCCA 2018 as a free gift. It was previously available on CollegeHumor's subscription service Dropout. It was written by Jacob, Julia, and Tony Wilson, and illustrated by a new female artist each issue.
