Biography

Dragon Quest VIII

When they were just babies, both Carrie and twin brother Cash were adopted by the kind Mr. Golding, the descendant of one of the revered Seven Sages, and the richest man of Baccarat, owner of the local Casino; as a minor result, the twins are unaware of which one of them is actually the older sibling. According to the townspeople of Baccarat, growing up Cash and Carrie used to get along like peas in a pod, but they eventually began to compete for their father's attention as they got older, growing extremely competitive with one another; nevertheless, their lives were relatively peaceful alongside their adoptive parent.

Unfortunately, shortly after reaching the young adult age, their adoptive father was murdered by the Rhapthorne-possessed Dhoulmagus, although the burly man was able to severly injure the jester before his demise; in retaliation, the twins hired a band of adventurers to track him down at the Dark Ruins and avenge his death. Unfortunately, the group was unsuccessful, as they couldn't enter the ruins due to a magical dark aura preventing anyone from entering, electing to instead keep watch on its entrance, until the Hero and his party were able to enter the ruins thanks to the Sun mirror and defeat Dhoulmagus, after which the adventurers returned to Baccarat to make their report to Golding's children; meanwhile, the siblings had decided to keep Golding's death a secret, only revealing it to the pubblic after he was avenged with Dhoulmagus's defeat.

In an optional sidequest, the party paid a visit to Golding's mansion after the events at Arcadia and learnt about the quarrel undergoing between the twins over who should inherith his inheritance. To settle their argument and determine which of them will be the worthy heir, Cash and Carrie decided to undergoe the ancient Golding Family trial at to the Dragon Graveyard; as they were looking for a respective group of bodyguards to accompany them to the trial site, Cash and Carrie took the opportunity to propose to hire the party for such task, leaving to the player's choice on which sibling to aid, the other taking staff from the mansion to act as their bodyguards.

Regardless of the choice, the two twins served the party dinner and allowed them to spend the night at the Golding mansion as guests before leaving for the Dragon Graveyard at dawn the next day. Howver, it would turn out that the unchosen sibling secretly had the maid put sleeping powder in their twin and the party's meals so that they would oversleep the next day, allowing the unchosen sibling to reach the dungeon before them in the morning, their indignant twin and the party in hot pursuit to make up for the lost time.

The party journeyed into the dungeon with their employer in tow, finding scattered throughout it the adventurers the siblings had originally hired to defeat Dhoulmagus, now serving as the bodyguards of the other sibling, their charge deciding to leave them behind and proceed alone when they got injured, thusly getting even further ahead in the trial. When the group reached the end of the dungeon however, they saw the unchosen twin cornered by a pair of powerful monsters, a Red horn and a Blue fang. While initially thinking that this was just another of their sibling's ruses, the employer stepped in and tried to protect their twin when they realized that the danger was real, getting knocked out in the process.

As the monsters were defeated, the unchosen sibling incorrectly belived that their twin had died protecting them, and vowed to make them proud by running the casino, only for said knocked out twin to suddently getting back up, having realized that they no longer cared for the contest, having been so pushy because they wanted their twin's respect as the older sibling, agreeing to let them become the true heir. However, at the Doors of Judgement, the final test of the trial comprised of a big, heavy door with red-hot knobs, the siblings realized that one lacked the strenght to enter the chamber alone, and thusly agreed to instead open the doors together and split the fortune. Opening the doors burned the mark of the Golding clan on their hand, and the magical projection of their ancestor, the ancient sage Golding, recognized them as both legitimate heirs, even though neither Cash and Carrie were related by blood to Golding. Finally putting their sibling rivarly at rest for good, Cash and Carrie at last agreed to run Baccarat's casino with each other.

Back at Baccarat, the siblings showed off their marks to the townspeople and announced that they would be splitting their father's fortune equally and reopening the casino the next day, earning them cheers and applause. The two invited the party to spend the night again at their mansion and gave them a gift of 600 tokens as a reward for helping them with the trial.

In the Nintendo 3DS version, both Cash and Carrie participate in the new Rank X of the Monster Arena, where they are described as the Bickering Brats of Baccarat; their team, named Double or Nothing, consists of a Goodybag, a Bone baron, and a Gold golem.
