Lich

A Lich is a mage transformed into an undead while retaining their true, original consciousness. The liches are the great protectors of the Grand Necropolis, bulwarks against forces that threaten creation, and is also the most hallowed rank in the Mourn Watch.[1]

Lichdom

The lich lords of the Grand Necropolis are necromancers who have transformed themselves into liches and oversee the ritual to induct other mages into their ranks. The process of becoming a lich is called lichdom. Not all mages can attain lichdom and candidates are vetted with years of tests and rituals by the lich lords. The qualifications for lichdom are vague as there are no ready instructions for lichdom. The steps to lichdom must be discovered on one's own, over years, to be fully understood. Emmrich Volkarin for example, would have had to accept that people need to naturally die and make peace with it to achieve lichdom.

What is known about the lichdom ritual is a Mourn Watcher kills the candidate, and after the candidate's death, their soul will be drawn back into their body, instead of moving on to whatever lies beyond. Traditionally, candidates for lichdom face one final sifting of the soul. Some who undertake the ritual to become a lich and are found unworthy just die from the process. Other unworthy candidates become a half-lich, a mortal undead who maintains their body by stealing souls.[2] Those that succeed in becoming a lich however, attain immortality, prestige, and the most hallowed rank in the Mourn Watch.

Lichdom grants Mourn Watchers a chance to serve their sacred purpose past their alotted natural years. Lichdom serves a purpose: a chance to combat the dark things in creation—threats to both the world and the Fade—for all of their immortal life. The liches of the Necropolis have the insight, and the abilities, to oppose these threats.

As a lich, some of the living senses will dull, but new senses will become available. Liches can put on a disguise to impersonate the living by casting a magical spell called a glamour. Glamours are meant to put others at ease instead of discomforting them with their true, ghastly appearance.[1]
