Dr. Fater

My predecessor told me that he's very interesting. But here at the hospital, he's just a patient like anyone else.

— Dr. Fater, Episode 123

Dr. Fater is the head of the psychiatric ward of his hospital, and Nambong's doctor.

Appearance

Ep162

Dr. Fater is Nambong's reimagining of Professor Chun that he dreamt of during his coma. The two share many similarities in their appearance and personality. Dr. Fater and Professor Chun both have dark blue hair and brown skin. In the end of the third season, Fater fully transforms into Chun's appearance, joining the two personalities in Nambong's mind.

Personality

Ep151

Dr. Fater is a sharp, observant person. He picks up on expressions and behavioral changes quickly, rivaling Nambong's skill as a psychologist. He is straightforward and blunt but measured, earning him his reputation as a good psychiatrist. Outside of his profession, Fater has a pleasant personality and is very open with the nurses and patients.

History

Dr. Fater's father was the head of the surgery department of his hospital, and took great pride in his work. He wanted all of his children to become doctors, and was happy to see his son and daughter follow in his footsteps. When Fater decided to pursue psychology, his father berated him and told him to pay for school on his own. Fater decided to apply to medical school under the pretenses of becoming a surgeon, but decided to pursue psychiatry once he was accepted. His father disowned him once he learned about his decision, and told Fater never to contact him again. Fater honored his father's wishes and stayed away from him, even changing his professional name to avoid his influence.

Relationships

Nambong Baek

The proof that you're valuable just the way you are... isn't in that senile old man.

— Nambong, Episode 161

Ep156

Dr. Fater and Dr. Frost initially had a rough relationship due to their suspicions of one another. Nambong was too attached to his role as a psychologist that he did not trust in Fater's treatment capabilities, and Fater was adamant about being the official in charge. Their relationship became easier once Frost began sharing his vulnerabilities with his hallucinations. He placed his trust in Fater, and Fater acknowledged some of the wisdom in Frost's unorthodoxy. He even opened up to him about some of his own struggles with his father. Though he was not willing to accept help with his insecurities, in the end it was Nambong who encouraged Fater to look beyond his father's vision of who he was and to stand in his own vision.

Nambong's roommate

Dr. Fater is the guardian of Nambong's roommate. He takes him outside and monitors his progress, similar to Professor Chun's role to Nambong.
