Background
On April 22, 2020, Doja teased the song on an Instagram livestream, along with the unreleased track "Whiskey". In a January 2021 Q&A with fans on the app Hotel Hideaway, Doja confirmed that she still wanted to release Payday. In February 2021, the livestream snippet of the song began getting copyright claimed on YouTube, leading fans to believe the song is set to be released in the near future on her third album, Planet Her. Leaked snippets of the song were also circulating around this time. In June 2021, it was confirmed that Payday would be on Planet Her after Doja Cat posted the track list on her Instagram. It was also announced that Young Thug would feature on the song.
