Grace

Grace is the posthumous overarching protagonist of the Dog Man series. She was Petey's mother and Li'l Petey's grandmother and was first mentioned in For Whom the Ball Rolls.

Appearance

She is a calico cat with orange and white spots, a round tail, and a black ear.

Personality

Grace was kind, loving, optimistic, and very clever at jokes and always loved and cared about everyone she holds dear to her, even accepting to hug both Big Jim and Petey and offering advice to them and always tried her best to give her son a happy and pleasant childhood even when the times were tough.

History

When they were younger, Grampa stole the Ring of Destiny and Stuff, and proposed to her, and she accepted.

She and her son, Petey, were abandoned by Grampa when she was sick. They then went to live in a housing shelter. She later died from her illness, which contributed to Petey becoming evil. She was kind to Petey, and Petey loved her very much. She has a physical debut in a flashback in Mothering Heights, where Petey explains to Sarah Hatoff in an interview how her love affected him.

She and Petey moved to Happy Home Shelter when Grampa abandoned them, as they didn't have much money or food (Petey's dad was most likely the main source of income). She always forgave Petey whenever he did something bad. Although Petey's mother died, all of her love still survived. And soon the events of A Tale of Two Kitties, when Petey accidentally created Li'l Petey, his mom's love became something new and beautiful.

Pre-Dog Man

Before Dog Man, she was very kind to Petey. Grampa left when she fell ill, and she later died. She played the ukulele, which she later passed on to Petey after her death.

For Whom the Ball Rolls

Petey's Mom was first mentioned in For Whom the Ball Rolls. When Petey first mentions his father, he said that he abandoned his mother and himself, leaving them all alone.

Grime and Punishment

She is mentioned more often in this book than in previous books of the series. Petey explains to Li'l Petey that Grampa left when she was sick. At the end of the book, they go to bring flowers to her grave.

Mothering Heights

As Petey explains through a flashback, he and his mom had to go to a shelter, as she was sick and Grampa had already left. They didn't have much money and food, but she did all she could do to raise her son. Petey usually got mad and broke things, but his mother knew that it was hard for him too, and forgave him. Though, because she was sick, she passed away. Later on, in the middle of Petey's life of crime, his mom's love was reborn, through Li'l Petey. In the very end of the book, Li'l Petey found her Ukulele, followed by Petey saying that he thought he lost it, but he had it all along.

The Scarlet Shedder

When Petey goes to bed, he has a flashback in the form of a dream. Back when he was a child, he was in the hospital for his tail. Once they went back to their house, they saw that they got evicted, and had to take a bus to another city to go to a shelter. Later, once he was tired of working at Robo-Time Industries, he has another flashback/dream. Once he and his mother arrived at the Happy Home Shelter, Petey is disappointed to see how small their room was. This is where he meets Little Jim. Little Jim comes and meets Petey talking about diarrhea and chairs. He then tells Grace that his parents are in heaven. Grace corrected what Little Jim remembered from his mother that "We can't control the wind but we can adjust our sails", meaning they can't control everything but it's not going to happen to them and they should react to it.

Big Jim Begins

In a wordless flashback, Disco Grampa proposes to her with the Ring of Destiny and Stuff.

• She enjoyed playing the ukulele and passed it down to Petey when she died. Petey thought he lost it all up into Mothering Heights. However, Li'l Petey found it in the rubble of Petey's home. She is also seen unpacking the ukelele in The Scarlet Shedder.
• She and Li'l Petey were the only family members who truly loved Petey.
• Her name was revealed in Dog Man: The Scarlet Shedder after she signed the paperwork with the name Grace.
