- ―The Zyclops' only response[src]
The Zyclopses are the secondary antagonists of the 2022 Disney•Pixar animated film Lightyear. They are an army of dutiful robots loyal to Zurg.
Role in the film
A Zyclops robot is first seen placing a device on the XL-15 teleporting it to Zurg's ship. It then reports to Zurg that it successfully brought the ship Buzz Lightyear is using, telling the robot to find Buzz and capture him only for Buzz and Izzy Hawthorne to hide into a place where no Zyclopses can find him. Buzz later sees the base protected by a laser shield which Commander Burnside placed onto the base while a group of Zyclopses attack the base, telling Izzy that the citizens of T'Kani Prime were counting on him. Later, a Zyclops breaks through the base where Izzy's team is at, capturing Buzz and attempting to bring him to Zurg via teleportation device, only for Izzy, Sox, and Mo to defend him in battle. Just before the Zyclops plans to bring Buzz to Zurg, Mo fires a harpoon onto the Zyclops' head, causing the robot to become disabled. With the Zyclops foiled, Zurg becomes furious that he lost a Zyclops to Izzy's team, causing Zurg to take revenge against Buzz by sending a large army of Zyclopses just as Zurg boards his ship to reach T'Kani Prime. However, the Zyclops that was hit with a harpoon fired by Mo suddenly reactivates itself, planning to report to Zurg. It then arrives at the depot where Buzz and the Junior Patrol went to by scanning the truck, trying to find clues about Buzz.
Later during an ambush at the Terilium Mine, Zurg commands a group of Zyclopses who are sent on a dispatch from their ship to capture Buzz. The harpooned Zyclops finds a meat sandwich trying to look for clues for Buzz and his allies to know where they are at. Later, more Zyclopses prepare to land onto the Terilium Mine to find and capture Buzz just as Buzz and his allies board the Armadillo to find Zurg and defeat him. The Zyclops that landed on the area chase after the ship where Buzz and his friends are at, just as Darby uses her weapon to repel a retaliating Zyclops before it enters while Buzz plans to lead them to the fiery geysers in order to dispatch the robots. As the Zyclops continue to chase them, one of them gets deactivated upon hitting a piece of a rock pillar which the Armadillo crashed into, followed by Mo tossing a grenade into two Zyclopses, resulting two extra robots to be destroyed. The harpooned Zyclops sees the Armadillo passing through and plans to chase after the ship and just as the Armadillo arrives at the fire geysers, it crashes into the harpooned Zyclops, which later falls into the geysers.
As another Zyclops places a device to capture the Armadillo, Buzz blasts away another Zyclops which collides with another one, leaving one Zyclops left during the chase. Just as the Armadillo prepares for hyper speed, the ship could not launch, due to the fuel crystal being ejected from the ship. As Buzz attempts to grab the crystal, he takes on the lone Zyclops chasing his ship, which it grabs the fuel and then takes it to Zurg. Zurg, who captured Buzz and took him to his ship, passes by the Zyclops who hands him the fuel crystal, which Zurg explains that the robots who work for here cannot say Buzz's name but instead Zurg's name. Later, Zurg summons two red Zyclopses to capture Buzz after he opposed when he feared that Zurg performing any more hyper speed actions would erase the timeline. Two gray Zyclopses in the control room notice Buzz equipped with the fuel crystal following Old Sox in a plan for Buzz to destroy the ship.
Meanwhile, one of the stabilized Zyclopses attempts to report to Zurg, only to be crushed by the Armadillo which lands on the Zyclops just as Izzy, Mo, and Darby obtain teleportation devices from the disabled Zyclopses. Furthermore, when Mo, Izzy, Darby, and Sox are planning to rescue Buzz in Zurg's ship, Mo and Darby notice a group of patrolling Zyclopses passing through, planning to find a way to distract the Zyclopses using a teleportation device. Just as the Zyclopses approach, they notice the device that Darby and Mo put, which they react in confusion. Soon as the Zyclopses notice the teleportation device that Darby and Mo placed onto their path, they notice the two above them and prepare to attack. Fearing that they are about to be killed, Mo pulls the string on Darby's suit which the hatch they are on drops onto one of the Zyclopses; Mo and Darby retreat back into the Armadillo, the surviving Zyclopses inside the ship later become destroyed as Zurg's ship explodes.
As Buzz, Sox, and the Junior Patrol land back on T'Kani Prime, the harpooned Zyclops prepares to attack only for Commander Burnside to take out the robot, followed by him and the rest of the ZAP Patrol surrounding Buzz and his allies; Burnside gives Buzz a new plan to start the Universe Protection Division, a new version of the Space Ranger Corps where Buzz is rehired as a Space Ranger, only for Buzz to tell him that he started his own team.
Trivia
- The Zyclopses almost share some similarities to the Zurg Bots from Toy Story 2 and the Hornets from Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, particularly they share the same color scheme, yellow and black. They also fire lasers from their hands.
- They also strongly resemble the two robots guarding the Pizza Planet entrance, and the robots from the deleted opening of Toy Story.
- The name Zyclops is parody on the word Cyclops, a one-eyed giant from Greek mythology. Also like the cyclops, Zyclops have one red glowing eye.
- Their cyclop-like style is similar to the various mecha of the Principality of Zeon such as Zaku in the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise.
- The Zyclopses are all voiced by the film's director, Angus MacLane.
- It is revealed by the alternate Buzz Lightyear that the Zyclopses were having trouble pronouncing his name properly and thus giving him his villainous identity.
