Snake is a character in the Toy Story franchise, first introduced in the 1995 Disney/Pixar animated feature film Toy Story.
Background
Personality
Although not aggressive, Snake rarely lives on his own and is often seen with his partner Robot. Due to his lack of feet, Snake moves around through slithering, slinking, or coiling. In spite of this personality, he occasionally uses his rattle when excited, like when he saw Sid Phillips blowing up toys for fun, causing Snake to react in fear.[1]
Physical appearance
Hence his name, Snake is a green jointed rattlesnake toy with a pattern of purple segments, a red tongue sticking out of his mouth, two thin eyebrows, and two white eyes with black pupils.
Appearances
Toy Story
As Woody organizes a staff meeting, Snake and his partner Robot are called upon to help him prepare for his podium duty. As Snake retreats, Robot tells him to help Woody, so Snake pushes a tub of Tinker Toys for Woody to use as a podium and then attends the meeting with the rest of Andy's toys, explaining to them about Andy's birthday. Later, when Buzz Lightyear arrives which Andy received for his birthday, Snake is seen lifting weights made from Tinker Toys during the "Strange Things" sequence and later gives tapes to Buzz to repair his cardboard ship.
Snake then appears again the next day witnessing Sid Phillips destroying a Combat Carl toy using a dynamite, causing him and the other toys to react in fear with Snake shaking his rattle, which the dynamite's explosion destroys the toy. Just as Andy is on his way to Pizza Planet and after Woody accidentally knocked Buzz off the window, the other toys accuse him of making it intentional, so Snake and the other toys attack him as a form of revenge (in this case, Snake coils around Woody's ankles, giving him no chance to escape). However, the attack was halted when Andy arrives and brings Woody with him, causing the other toys to retreat.
During the climax of the film as Woody and Buzz are on their way to catch up with the Egg Man Movers truck driving RC on the street, Snake and the rest of Andy’s toys became alarmed and believe he is trying to kill RC, accusing Woody for being a traitor, leading Snake and the rest of the toys to reject him from the truck, which he then hi-fives Mr. Potato Head for doing so (although Woody claims he was trying to save Buzz). Afterwards, when Lenny sees Woody and Buzz riding on RC, realizing that Woody is telling the truth, Snake and the other toys involved in rejecting Woody felt guilty and realize they misunderstood him, so they decide to rescue him, Buzz, and RC with help from Slinky Dog; however, RC's batteries fail, causing him to be unable to move, leaving Woody and Buzz behind on the street. Suddenly when the "Big One" rocket that Sid placed on Buzz earlier with the fuse being ignited, Woody and Buzz deploy RC into the moving van, causing Snake and the other ways to make way for RC (who accidentally knocks Mr. Potato Head's parts) just before Woody and Buzz land into the Davis family's van.
At the end of the film, Snake is last seen listening to Sarge's report of Andy receiving a Christmas present, which is a puppy with Molly's being a Mrs. Potato Head.
Toy Story 2
Snake appears in the beginning of the film as one of the toys that fears being sold in the yard sale. After Woody was kidnapped, he is seen amongst Andy's other toys who learn that Woody was kidnapped by a toy collector named "Al McWhiggin" with Buzz Lightyear planning to save him. He last appears at the end of the film dancing to Wheezy's performance of "You've Got a Friend in Me" after Woody returns home with Jessie and Bullseye.
Toy Story 3
Snake only appears in the flashback sequences in the beginning of the film in Andy's home movies with Andy playing with his toys. However, in the present when Andy grew up, Snake was either sold or donated as revealed by Woody's final staff meeting in Andy's house.
Video game appearances
Toy Story
In most versions of the game, Snake appears in the level "Revenge of the Toys". As the level's plot shows of Snake being one of Andy's toys accusing Woody of knocking Buzz off the window, Snake appears slithering on a shelf in the level. Touching Snake in this level causes the player Woody to take damage.
Toy Story: Animated StoryBook
Snake appears in Toy Story: Animated Storybook where he is shown to have a special skill known as the "Snake Dance".
Disney Parks
Toy Story Parade
Snake was one of the toys featured during the discontinued Toy Story Parade at Disney's Hollywood Studios, which was used to promote the original film when it was in theaters. He was seen in the parade's last float where Woody was interacting with Mr. Mike's microphone, along with Rex, Lenny, Roly Poly Clown, and some Troikas.
Trivia
- The only line Snake said was "Ow!", which was heard in the original Toy Story film.
- In an early version of the original Toy Story film, Snake would have inquired about what the button on Buzz's chest did when he pressed it, prior to this line being given to Rex in the final version of the film.
- As a toy, Snake would have no unique purpose where the sections making up his body would make him move from side to side so when one holds his tail, the body and head would move to and fro, interpreting as if he were alive. In the film, Snake's segments move up and down, meaning that he would be limping when Andy holds his tail.
