Sharks

The Sharks are a group of gang members featured in the 2021 live-action feature film West Side Story. Based on the Capulets from the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, they are rivals with another street gang called the Jets.

Background

The Sharks are a local Puerto Rican street gang headed by Bernardo, who live on the streets of New York City. While out wandering the streets, they encounter members from a rival street gang called the Jets who are led by Riff. However, a fight breaks out but is quickly broken up by Lieutenant Schrank and Officer Krupke. The Sharks are then challenged by the Jets to a rumble at a dance being held in a gym and both determine that the winner will gain undisputed control of the neighborhood. As a result of this rivalry, María's association with the Sharks and Tony's association with the Jets causes conflict when they first fall for each other.^[1]
