Nanny-bots are robots featured in Disney's 2011 co-produced film Mars Needs Moms. They are a method of resource used to raise Martian hatchlings under tyrannical orders of the Supervisor.
Background
Powered through technology in the Supervisor's headquarters, nanny-bots are robots built and used by Martian females to raise hatchlings. Each Nanny-bot is programmed with the memories extracted from a human mother into its system, giving Martian hatchlings a strict order and discipline under the tyranny of the Supervisor during sunrise - particularly during the moment when Gribble's mother had her memories extracted via extraction machine to the nanny-bots. Each individual nanny-bot can only raise one Martian hatchling at a time. Once a nanny-bot is disabled afterwards, it cannot be reused again after a Martian hatchling grows up, leading the nanny-bot to be scrapped. In addition to the process explained by Gribble, another negative disadvantage to the nanny-bots can occur whenever a power surge occurs within the Supervisor's lair such as the case when Milo rescued his mother from the extraction machine in a plan to save her from a demise like this, causing all the nanny-bots to become permanently disabled. In the aftermath after Ki showed the evidence of what a true Martian family must be to the other Martians, the nanny-bots have since been discontinued, as the Martian females continue raising hatchlings like what a real mother should do.
Role in the film
After Milo became aware of his mother being put into the memory extraction machine, Gribble explains to him about that Martians are born popping out of fragile ground every 25 years and the Martians have bad treatment to their own babies and all the Martians taking control of the Supervisor's lair are females, followed by the Martians building nanny-bots to raise them to keep their community growing. He explains to Milo that whenever the Martians abduct a human mother with a memory extraction machine, it takes out the discipline of her and puts it into nanny-bots and all the memories from a mother are extracted and put into each nanny-bot during sunrise, leading Milo to hatch a plan to save his mother from a demise similar to what happened to Gribble's mother.
Throughout the events of the film, Milo encounters the memory extraction machine where his mother is placed, planning to save her from a demise. To his determination, he was able to save her before this happened, resulting the ray gun from the extraction machine to misfire and hit the space station instead. This results all the remaining nanny-bots inside to be disabled as the Martians inside cause a major commotion, much to the Supervisor's fury. With the nanny-bots disabled, the Martians then topple all of them into a domino effect. Furthermore, Ki confronts the Supervisor for her betrayal to her own species, telling her that Martians are meant to be raised by their own species, not be robots, resulting the Supervisor to be arrested for her tyranny and crimes.
During the credits of the film, a giant claw grabs a group of defunct nanny-bots, dropping them into the incinerator, showing that the Martians no longer uses nanny-bots to raise their young.
