Jerry Dandridge is the main antagonist of the 2011 Touchstone Pictures film Fright Night. He is a vampire who preys on the small neighborhood of Charley Brewster.
Background
Jerry is a vampire who has been around for an undetermined time. He chose to settle near Las Vegas, Nevada, an unusual place for a vampire, except for the fact that it offers a constant night life and is perfect for a burrowing type like him. He ultimately meets his match in the form of Charley Brewster, a teenage boy who grows wise to his methods and works to destroy him and take what he wants.
Personality
Jerry presents himself as a cool and sexy individual who has the ability to charm anyone with his words. In actuality, he is a master manipulator and a sinister monster. He basically has no soul and is purely motivated by his own hunger and nature to survive. He does have a sense of humor and takes pleasure in what he does. He is willing to let people live if they choose to ignore him, but this rarely occurs, and he sticks to feeding his vampiric thirst.
Powers and abilities
Jerry possesses all the typical strengths and weaknesses of vampires.
- Enhanced strength - Jerry is shown to be capable of lifting typical heavy objects with ease. He also ripped out the ground with a shovel that otherwise would be difficult for the average person.
- Enhanced speed - Jerry is shown to move swiftly and quickly and can do so quietly.
- Enhanced durability - Jerry is shown to be able to survive massive damage.
- Sharp fangs - Like any other vampire, Jerry can produce fangs to bite and drain blood. He apparently uses this method as well to pass on vampiric traits to people.
- Transformation - Jerry can alter his appearance to a more animalistic look. While he mainly retains this with his fingernails, his face can also change to a more monstrous appearance.
Weaknesses
- Wooden stakes - Or any sharp wooden object can easily pierce him. Unless it is stabbed directly through his heart, he can still survive though it greatly incapacitates him.
- Owned domiciles - Jerry cannot enter a house unless he is invited in, leading to an admittedly humorous situation. He can enter a house if there is no owner though.
- Sunlight - An instant kill for Jerry if he is hit directly by it.
Trivia
- In the original film, Jerry was played by Chris Sarandon and was portrayed appropriately for a 1980s audience: suave and debonair with a sociable demeanor. His sinister intentions were more subtle, and he specifically targeted Amy due to her resembling a long-lost love of his. He was also accompanied by a familiar named Billy Cole who may have been a ghoul or undead being of some kind.
- The original Jerry, Chris Sarandon, cameos in the film as a passing motorist named Jay Dee who gets devoured by the new Jerry.
- Heath Ledger was considered for the part, but died before he could be approached.
