IG-11 is a character from the Disney+ series The Mandalorian. He is an IG-series assassin droid who worked as a bounty hunter during the New Republic era. Once an enemy of Din Djarin, IG-11 was later reformed and became an ally during Moff Gideon's attack on Nevarro.
Background
IG-11 was an IG-series assassin droid who worked as a bounty hunter around 9 ABY. Part of a series of assassin droids running amok across the galaxy, IG-11 was programmed to follow the protocols of the Bounty Hunters' Guild, and possessed explosive constructs within him that prevented him from being captured while on the job.
Physical appearance
IG-11 has a slim body built on an armored substrate that could withstand repeated attacks, and was reliable and durable. He wore two ammunition bandoliers and had thermal detonator built into him as a self-destruct mechanism.
Personality
He used to be cold, calculating, and loyal. His only mission in life was to follow orders, which made him a significant opponent for The Mandalorian. Later, after he was reformed, he was direct, unaware of sarcasm, and didn't know how to lie, which made him somewhat childish.
Roles in the series
IG-11 was sent to the planet Arvala-7 to eliminate a threat to the Empire. The Mandalorian, too, was sent to bring that threat back alive. When they finally met on the planet, Mando and IG-11 were cornered by mercenaries, who attempted to kill them. When IG-11 tried to activate his self-destruct as a last resort, Mando managed to keep him fighting. Upon entering where the target was, IG-11 raised his blaster to kill him, but it was ultimately Djarin who shot him in order to rescue the child.
The droid's body was restored by Kuiil, who managed to repair IG-11, giving him a new, more innocent and loyal personality.
When two Stormtroopers kidnapped Grogu, IG-11 presented himself to them as the child's nanny droid, and when the troopers failed to respond, the droid broke one of their arms and climbed into the 74-Z speeder bike with Grogu. During the escape from Moff Gideon's troops, Mando was badly wounded, so when no one else was looking, IG-11 instructed him to remove his helmet, in order to continue his mission of protecting and caring. Mando removed it and the droid applied a bacta gel that healed his wounds instantly.
While in the sewers of Nevarro, IG-11 decided that the only way to protect Grogu was to sacrifice himself. The droid began walking on lava, which began to damage its circuits. When he finally reached the Imperials who were waiting to ambush Mando and Grogu, he activated his self-destruct, which cleared the way for the heroes.
