H.E.R.B.I.E. is a Marvel Comics character that is commonly associated with the Fantastic Four. He has appeared in numerous Marvel related productions.
H.E.R.B.I.E. did not originate from the comics. Rather he came from the 1978 animated series adaptation of The Fantastic Four before transitioning into the comics. The producers behind the show were unable to use the Human Torch due to the rights to the character being used for a feature film that never materialized. To make up for it, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby conceived of H.E.R.B.I.E. to fill in for the character.
A myth surrounding H.E.R.B.I.E’s creation in comic book circles, mostly because the rights issue was not widely known at the time, was that he was created to replace Johnny Storm in order to prevent children from setting themselves on fire to imitate the Human Torch. This has now been debunked as knowledge of the rights issues have become more commonplace.
