Commander Cody

This article is about the character Cody from Star Wars. For other characters, see Cody.

Well, you know what makes us different from battle droids? We make our own decisions. Our own choices. And we have to live with them too.
―Cody

Commander Cody (birth number CC-2224) is a clone marshal commander who fought alongside Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi and is the leader of the 212th Attack Battalion. He is also commander of the Third Systems Army, 7th Sky Corps, and Ghost Company.

Background

Personality

Yeah, regular folk don't understand. Sometimes in war, it's hard to be the one that survives.
―Cody

Cody is a loyal, courageous, careful, and wise soldier. A natural leader, Cody is an excellent commander, albeit a little rigid on procedure but always capable of improvisation. Like all clone troopers, Cody possesses a sense of camaraderie equal to brotherhood with all his comrades, though he is very disdainful of traitors or detractors. He has a deep friendship with Obi-Wan Kenobi, his most frequent Jedi General, appreciating his caution and sagacity. After fighting for a long time in the Clone Wars and losing many brothers, Cody was haunted by a certain survivor's guilt.

Following the activation of his inhibitor chip, Cody became completely submissive, cold-blooded and indifferent, becoming a pawn of the Galactic Empire. He did not hesitate to order the elimination of Obi-Wan, his close friend, without the slightest remorse and then contributed to the enslavement of Kashyyyk.

However, Cody's original personality slowly resurfaced as the effect of his chip deteriorated. Initially loyal to the Empire, Cody was not as blindly loyal as the others and did not entirely feel that the Empire was doing good. Through his benevolence and former sense of honor, he managed to defuse the conflict with the Separatist Tawni Ames, but became shocked when the Imperial officer ordered her execution. It wasn't until Cody's old friend Crosshair killed Ames in cold blood, and Desix was completely subjugated by the Empire, that Cody fully understood he was serving the wrong side. Before deserting the Empire, he would express one last time to a zealous Crosshair that clones were supposed to be free to make their own choices, not like battle droids, secretly pointing out that this was how the Empire viewed clones.

Like most clone troopers, Cody was born on Kamino. Cody was involved in many battles and conflicts in the war, though he did not participate in the First Battle of Geonosis, but he did participate in many others alongside Obi Wan Kenobi, such as the Battle of Christophisis, Battle of Teth, Second Battle of Geonosis, Battle of Ryloth, Battle of Selucime, Battle of Umbara, and Battle for Anaxes.

Outside of direct battlefields, Cody has also contributed to rescue, infiltration, and other missions. He and Rex have notably helped arrest the rogue clone Slick, recaptured the Rishi moon station with the help of inexperienced clones, and Cody briefly led the targeting of the Cyber Center on Anaxes with the upgraded clone squadron Clone Force 99 until he was injured when their ship was shot down in mid-air. He recovered in time to conclude the Battle of Anaxes and participate in the Battle of Yerbana.

Revenge of the Sith

Later in the Clone Wars, during the Battle of Utapau, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Cody lead the 212th Attack Battalion with the aim of capturing/destroying General Grievous. After Obi-Wan destroyed the General, Cody received Order 66 transmission from Darth Sidious that triggered his inhibitor chip to turn on the Jedi and ordered an AT-TE to fire on Obi-Wan.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch

Commander Cody appears in the episode: "The Solitary Clone" where he assigns Crosshair to rescue Governor Grotten on the former Separatist Planet known as Desix. However, it turns out Tawni Ames, the planet's governor was defending the planet from her world's uprising after the Republic rejected for a peaceful solution during the Clone Wars. As Cody argued for a Peaceful solution, Crosshair kills Ames under Grotten's orders and Desix is now under Imperial control. Upon returning to Coruscant, Cody begins to question the Empire's actions if they're doing any good in the galaxy, before deserting the Empire.

Star Wars Rebels

Cody was mentioned by Captain Rex, where he and Rex made up a bunch of protocols back in the Clone Wars which the Empire still uses. He was also mentioned, when Rex accidentally called Kanan "Cody", when they were captured by Kalani and his droid army.

Trivia

  • Commander Cody was going to appear in Obi-Wan Kenobi, where he had removed his bio-chip and would have found Obi-Wan on Tatooine. There was going to be a subplot in the series where he had gone to protect Luke while Obi-Wan rescued Leia, but it ended up being dropped because of scheduling conflicts with Temuera Morrison who was working on The Book of Boba Fett.
  • He appears in the Star Wars Legends' 2003-2005 animated TV series Star Wars: Clone Wars "Chapter 22" from Cartoon Network.
  • Although one rank above Rex, Cody never acted as his direct superior due to their deep bond of trust and friendship, with the two acting primarily as teammates.
  • At the beginning of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Cody wears the Phase I clone trooper armor, but starting in season three, he wears his iconic Phase II armor that he wore in Revenge of the Sith. In Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Cody retains his Phase II armor but the orange color has been repainted gray.
  • Cody was considered to return in Star Wars Rebels as an external aid to Grand Admiral Thrawn against the Rebels since they were working with Rex. Since the idea of Cody working for the Empire during Rebels predated his appearance in Bad Batch, this was rectified so that Cody was abandoned to the Empire long before, leaving Cody's ultimate fate unknown.[1]
