- “Well, you know what makes us different from battle droids? We make our own decisions. Our own choices. And we have to live with them too.”
- ―Cody
Commander Cody (birth number CC-2224) is a clone marshal commander who fought alongside Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi and is the leader of the 212th Attack Battalion. He is also commander of the Third Systems Army, 7th Sky Corps, and Ghost Company.
Background
Personality
- “Yeah, regular folk don't understand. Sometimes in war, it's hard to be the one that survives.”
- ―Cody
Cody is a loyal, courageous, careful, and wise soldier. A natural leader, Cody is an excellent commander, albeit a little rigid on procedure but always capable of improvisation. Like all clone troopers, Cody possesses a sense of camaraderie equal to brotherhood with all his comrades, though he is very disdainful of traitors or detractors. He has a deep friendship with Obi-Wan Kenobi, his most frequent Jedi General, appreciating his caution and sagacity. After fighting for a long time in the Clone Wars and losing many brothers, Cody was haunted by a certain survivor's guilt.
Following the activation of his inhibitor chip, Cody became completely submissive, cold-blooded and indifferent, becoming a pawn of the Galactic Empire. He did not hesitate to order the elimination of Obi-Wan, his close friend, without the slightest remorse and then contributed to the enslavement of Kashyyyk.
However, Cody's original personality slowly resurfaced as the effect of his chip deteriorated. Initially loyal to the Empire, Cody was not as blindly loyal as the others and did not entirely feel that the Empire was doing good. Through his benevolence and former sense of honor, he managed to defuse the conflict with the Separatist Tawni Ames, but became shocked when the Imperial officer ordered her execution. It wasn't until Cody's old friend Crosshair killed Ames in cold blood, and Desix was completely subjugated by the Empire, that Cody fully understood he was serving the wrong side. Before deserting the Empire, he would express one last time to a zealous Crosshair that clones were supposed to be free to make their own choices, not like battle droids, secretly pointing out that this was how the Empire viewed clones.

Trivia
- Commander Cody was going to appear in Obi-Wan Kenobi, where he had removed his bio-chip and would have found Obi-Wan on Tatooine. There was going to be a subplot in the series where he had gone to protect Luke while Obi-Wan rescued Leia, but it ended up being dropped because of scheduling conflicts with Temuera Morrison who was working on The Book of Boba Fett.
- He appears in the Star Wars Legends' 2003-2005 animated TV series Star Wars: Clone Wars "Chapter 22" from Cartoon Network.
- Although one rank above Rex, Cody never acted as his direct superior due to their deep bond of trust and friendship, with the two acting primarily as teammates.
- At the beginning of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Cody wears the Phase I clone trooper armor, but starting in season three, he wears his iconic Phase II armor that he wore in Revenge of the Sith. In Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Cody retains his Phase II armor but the orange color has been repainted gray.
- Cody was considered to return in Star Wars Rebels as an external aid to Grand Admiral Thrawn against the Rebels since they were working with Rex. Since the idea of Cody working for the Empire during Rebels predated his appearance in Bad Batch, this was rectified so that Cody was abandoned to the Empire long before, leaving Cody's ultimate fate unknown.[1]
