"Captain Mateo" is the fifty-seventh episode of the Disney Channel animated series Elena of Avalor. It premiered on October 17, 2019 and is the eighth episode in the third season.
Plot
Elena and Mateo are on their way to a meeting of the Grand Council of Avalor. Mateo is coming to make sure Elena stays calm so her magic doesn't activate and bring something to life. Flo appears and accidentally makes Elena angry enough to activate her magic when she mentions Esteban. Elena's magic sends Mateo, Flo, Gabe, and Dona Paloma, after the latter pair show up, flying. Elena calms herself down by singing Love Always. The five of them then head to the Grand Council Chamber.
Meanwhile, Ash and Esteban are in the jungle on their way to Takaina. Ash conjures up footprints to fool the guards. Back at Avalor Palace, Dona Paloma has been given Esteban's seat on the Grand Council. Dona Paloma decides Mateo to be Captain of the Royal Guard. While Gabe dismisses this with scornful laughter, Elena and Luisa think that it's a great idea and the motion is passed. Gabe is upset and only calms down after Elena seals the room he stormed off into with her Scepter and explains magic must fight magic. Gabe arrives to tell the Guard to head north as footprints were found heading that way. Mateo says they're heading west as he knows that Ash is heading toward Takaina and the footsteps found heading north were conjured by Ash to fool them. Elena tells Gabe Mateo is right and they head west.
They arrive in Tepet Muul. Mateo tells Gabe and the Guard to stay put and he and Elena head into Takaina. A battle erupts between them and Ash and Esteban that sends Esteban into the Well of Crystals. Esteban teleports them all outside where the Guard sends the pair running. Ash and Esteban go back to Zopilote. Back at Avalor Palace, Gabe is made Captain of the Royal Guard once more with Mateo as his advisor.
