Terror Rifts are a feature of Diablo Immortal, introduced as part of the Precipice of Horror update.
Lore

Terror Rifts are gateways into Sanctuary, bursting out of the mortal realm's topsoil. They were used by Diablo's forces in their assault against Sanctuary. Adventurers were forced to venture through the rifts to halt the incoming invaders.[1]
Terror Rifts need an Oblivion Pillar at a particular location to act as a beacon for them to open.[2]
Gameplay

Terror Rifts will be active all the time. 1 zone will be invaded at random, with one Terror Rift portal appearing in the zone. The zone rotates every hour. The zone with the active Terror Rift portal is denoted on the world map, as well as the next zone with a countdown timer. Players must track down the portal to enter. After entering, each player gets 13 minutes to complete the Rift, with Stygian Spires spawning at set times. Even if the Terror Rift entrance closes at the hour, players who are already inside can stay for the remainder of their 13 minute periods.
The rift will take players to the Terrorwrought Realm version of the zone where the rift appeared. This map matches the geography of the normal map but the monsters are replaced with Terrorwrought monsters. These monsters drop Stygian Fragments, with Elite monsters dropping more fragments. After gathering a certain number of Fragments from fallen foes (displayed via a progress bar), the player must search for a Stygian Spire. The number of fragments required is 100, 150, 250 and 300 respectively for the four Spires. Sacrificing the required Fragments in one of these pointed beacons will initiate a one-on-one fight with a beefier opponent. Toppling this enemy grants a reward chest. The player can complete this process as many times as they can within 13 minutes, in order to press onto more plentiful rewards. Rewards may be earned up to 10 times a week from the Terror Rifts, resetting each Monday at 3 a.m. server time. Once a player acquires all weekly rewards, they can continue to run Rifts but will only be able to earn drops from enemies. Different players will see Spires in different locations on the map.
A successful run, whether solo or with a group of up to four others, will be met with a chance to earn Eternal Equipment, Terror Essence and other rewards from each reward chest the player(s) receive. Terror Rifts can be played starting at Hell II difficulty, with the quality of rewards received scaling with the difficulty level. If the first 3 spires destroyed don't drop a Terror Essence, the 4th one is guaranteed to drop one.
Notes
- The rift can be entered at any time. Players should sync their entries to make sure their time limits overlap.
- When a group of Elite monsters spawns near the player, Demons have found you! appears on the top of the screen.
- Due to the high spawn rate of monsters, these rifts present a great opportunity to build up long kill streaks, which are required for some Trophies.
- When the time is up, a mail with a few items is sent depending on the amount of leftover Stygian Fragments. However this only happens if the rift is "complete", which requires destroying at least one Stygian Spire. The same "completion" is what counts against the 10 runs per week.
- Some parts of the map are highlighted to indicate that there is a Stygian Spire in them. However monsters still spawn outside those areas and can be killed for fragments.
- The Gem Finder buff is active in a full party, allowing Normal Gems to be obtained.
- Warp points can be warped to just like on the main map, although due to the high number of mobs it is difficult to complete the teleport animation, so the best way is to stand on a warp point in the first place which skips the animation.
Development
Upon release, monster kills could not be shared between players, even between party members. The first player to tag a monster got the drop. This was later fixed with an update.
Originally there was no guarantee on the Terror Essence drop. The guarantee was added in the Nightmare Manifest update.
In the July 24 2024 update, the Terror Rift icons on the World Map were changed to be greyed out if the rift is not currently active (i.e. until 3 minutes before opening time).
In the October 30, 2024 update, Terror Rifts were changed in several ways:
- Originally Terror Rifts were only open every day from 8 a.m.–2 p.m. and 6 p.m.–1 a.m. server time. After the update, they are open 24 hours a day.
- Originally all players had the same countdown timer that was synced to the rift opening times. After the update, each player gets a 13-minute time from the moment they enter.
- Originally players shared Stygian Spire locations. After the update, each player gets their own set of locations, which might not overlap.
- Originally there were rift entrances on 3 different maps that stayed the same for the current period. After the update, there is only one entrance at a time that rotates every hour.
- Originally all Stygian Spires required 200 fragments to open. After the update, the costs are 100, 150, 250 and 300 in sequence.
- Originally opening the Spire would first initiate two waves of monsters, similarly to Hellslayer Bounties, before spawning the boss. After the update, the boss spawns immediately.
- Originally players had to search for Stygian Spires, and the icon would only appear if they were very close. After the update, a small icon appears on the map as well as a pointer in the main view, making finding the next Spire easier.
