History
Mars is the fourth planet from the sun and the home of the Martian race. It was a golden age as the Martian civilization was at the height of its peace and prosperity, but it was desolated a thousand years ago by the Imperium. The invaders were determined to make the planet their own, and the once-peaceful Martians quickly learned the ways of war. For centuries, the battles raged on. Finally, a small group of Martian survivors planned one final desperate attack. Inside an underground stronghold, the Martians unleashed a powerful nerve gas which paralyzed the Imperium invaders. The attack was successful, but the cost was dear as J'onn J'onzz was the only survivor, the last of his kind. J'onn sealed up the Imperium citadel to keep them in a constant state of suspended animation.[1]
For over 500 years, J'onn J'onzz stood guard over the Imperium. But while J'onn was in a hibernation cycle, Mars was visited by astronauts from Earth, J. Allen Carter and Ed Reiss. Carter unsealed the stronghold and accidentally revived the alien invaders. With all the Martians gone, the invaders had nothing left to feed upon, so they turned their sights to Earth. J'onn narrowly escaped and came to warn Earth of the coming danger, bringing a sample of a rare Martian plant to create another batch of the nerve gas. But the Martian plant was destroyed when J'onn was captured on Earth.[1]
