Synopsis for "Meanwhile..."

On Themyscira, Queen Hippolyte and a company of four begin the Hunt of Honor, a sacred hunt commencing the annual harvest festival known as the Feast of Five. Per tradition, the Hunt takes place at daybreak, in a clearing dominated by a statue of the Goddess Artemis; whatever animal first crosses the statue's shadow is to be the first game. As the five Amazons wait for such an animal, Menalippe admits her anxiety - her oracular duties having left her unused to violence - while Queen Hippolyte recalls her daughter's own struggles with the Hunt.

When Diana had first entered the Hunt, she was still too young to fully grasp the intricacies of life. Thus, when a buck had crossed the shadow, she "accidentally" fumbled her kill, unwilling to hurt such a majestic being. Furious, the Queen had ordered her to follow the buck and finish the kill, and Diana had sullenly obeyed, only to find the buck already downed by a boar. When the buck proved too wounded for her to treat, Diana pursued the boar in utter hate - the first hate she had ever felt for a living thing.

The Queen, however, had quelled Diana's rage, gently explaining the buck had been the Gods' chosen sacrifice; by defying that choice, Diana had not only insulted Olympus, but doomed the buck to a long, painful end, for it was her fumble that startled the buck into the boar's path. This, finally, impressed upon Diana the importance of the Hunt, and through her tears she had piously, mercifully slit the buck's throat. The boar, meanwhile, was left to run free - until the current Hunt, when the statue's shadow finally marks it the proper game.

Concurrent events in Man's World prove less whimsical. Etta Candy finds that Gen. Hillary has been transferred out of Massachusetts, and her new commanding officer is to be George Yedziniak, an ill-tempered militant that she and Steve had boldly - but unsuccessfully - testified against during the Vietnam tribunals. Meanwhile, Steve finds his life commandeered by Hermes, who insists that being roommate and companion to a mortal - especially one Themyscira's champion so approves of - is the best way to understand "modern" humanity.

After Steve reluctantly accepts his plans, the elated Messenger-God visits a temple in New Hampshire, which he had magically built for himself (and Wonder Woman) during his original "tour" of America. While still admiring this monument, Hermes admits his repair of Boston has left his divine energies at an ebb; thus, he begins dissolving the temple, meaning to reabsorb all the power he had spent building it. His efforts, however, are broken by an inexplicable spasm - which simultaneously grips Menalippe - that leaves behind a single coherent word: Gaea.

Meanwhile, Inspector Indelicato's findings convince Julia that Barbara Minerva is the Cheetah's alter-ego - a fact that panics her, recalling how the vicious cat-creature had almost killed Wonder Woman. Upon rushing home, the professor is relieved to find Vanessa has received a phone call from Wonder Woman, but quickly realizes the caller is only mimicking Wonder Woman's voice. As Julia demands answers, the caller - an Amazon of Bana-Mighdall - sullenly hangs up, before tearing a photograph of Julia and Wonder Woman.
