In the pre-WWII period of the Quality Universe, "Southland" seems to be a military code name for a real country. "Southland" appears only on a German map, and is the same size, shape, and location as Sweden.
Quality Universe, Blackhawk, 1946
In the Quality Universe, after World War II, the Republic of Southland was a tropical nation, at peace with its neighbors, but preyed upon by a gang of racketeers calling themselves the Winged Death Brotherhood. These gangsters came into conflict with the globe-trotting Blackhawk Squadron, and were quickly defeated.

Quality Universe, Hit Comics, 1940
- Eland, Finway, Northland, and Southland appear in a map on the splash panel of the X-5, Super Agent story in Hit Comics #4. Their geographic positions on that map correspond, respectively, to those of Iceland, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. With one exception, no other mention or reference to the names of any of these countries is made for the remainder of the story. It may be that this map, in the context of the Quality Universe, is merely symbolic, after the fashion of many earlier Will Eisner spy story splash panels, including several for both Black X and X-5.

- Historically, World War II changed the boundaries of several countries in the Real World. Naturally this would also be the case in the Quality Universe.
