Shazam! #35 is an issue of the series Shazam! (Volume 1) with a cover date of June, 1978.
Synopsis for "Backward, Turn Backward, O Time in Your Flight!"
Captain Marvel and Captain Marvel, Jr. return to New York City to find that cars are falling out of the sky! They soon find that the entire Verrazano-Narrows Bridge is gone, having disappeared while in use, but what’s worse, nobody thinks it’s strange! Junior is shocked to find when they go to inform Mr. Morris that all the cars are turning into older models. When flying around, they find the Lincoln Center, Madison Square Gardens and even the World Trade Center have disappeared… but Third Avenue Railroad has returned, despite being shut down in the early ‘70s. They fly back to Station WHIZ to find that Mr. Morris is confused to hear that there was some “financial trouble” Uncle Dudley described and, what’s more, they’ve never made television, but have considered now that World War II is over. They head back to see Mary Batson, but find she’s reverted to being strictly Mary Bromfield (before she met Billy) and is still wearing the broken locket that Billy and Mary once wore. Junior asks if she remembers the Wizard Shazam and when she says his name, she becomes Mary Marvel and remembers everything, figuring out that the world is reverting to the 1940s again and worry that if they turn back into their human forms, they’ll also forget the magic words and fly off to the Rock of Eternity to figure out what’s going on.
Thereof, the Wizard Shazam says that King Kull has escaped and is responsible for the time reversal, but that magic lightning bouncing off of Capt. Nazi’s forcefield freed him and he’s escaped into the realm of Eternity around them and create some sort of time-reversing machine. He again reminds them how King Kull’s race of Beastmen once ruled the Earth, treating humans like slaves, until the humans rebelled and destroyed them all, save for King Kull himself, who escaped to an underground chamber to enter suspended animation until the modern age. However, now it seems he wants to reverse time to resurrect his race of Beastmen to seize control of the world and has gone somewhere no man would follow. Shazam reveals that he has escaped into Hell itself and shows them a swirling portal leading there. The Marvel Family heads off through the realm of eternal darkness and find the shores of the River Styx and Charon, a bony and moderately goblin-like ferryman. Charon sends out the Cerberus to hold them back. Working together, they knock him back and Captain Marvel whips him into the other two to punch him out. They soon descend into the way to the city dolent. The Furies soon leap at them to try to attack them until Mary Marvel punches them back until she’s grabbed by Typhon, the double-headed dragon man of Greek myth. The Marvel Family team up to throw him into a pit. Captain Marvel wonders how they’re supposed to find King Kull across all of Hell. A topless woman appears to try to tempt Captain Marvel, which is enough to unnerve him enough to not notice she’s Echidna, the Mother of Serpents until Mary Marvel punches her in the head, making her leave. They soon find Satan himself and try to team up to attack him, but Junior says he’s fought him himself one before (when he was in the body of Sabbac,) but Satan says he’s much more powerful now when not held back by a feeble mortal form. They quickly find that they’re able to fight him together because their inherent goodness corrupts the tangible evil that Hell is consisted of. With Satan cast back, they soon find King Kull and rip apart his time-reversing machine, allowing history to progress as normal to the modern age of 1978. Returning to Station WHIZ, Billy, Mary and Freddy discover that they’re running out of money at Station WHIZ and are going to have to sell out to Ebenezer Batson, Billy’s evil uncle who stole his inheritance! Unknown, two cells have broken open… and King Kull and Captain Nazi have escaped from prison...
