History

In the 1920s and 1930s, in the Quality Universe, the post-WWI hellscape of Europe spawned a significant number of Central European Dictatorships, including: Aryania, Barbaria, Bothnia, Darmania, Dunland, Govania, Jarmania, Kampfland, Latavia, Nordicha, North Germany, Teutonia, Tuvania, Wurtberg and others. These countries were very similar in their national cultures, and the some of the leadership cadres of their ruling parties bore strong resemblances to their foreign counterparts. When the Second World War got well and truly rolling, all of these countries, except Teutonia, were not only admitted to the Axis Powers, but politically annexed and absorbed into Hitler's Nazi Germany. After WWII, almost none of these nations existed again.

From 1936 until 1940, the nation of Kampfland threw its entire industrial might into building a Transatlantic Suspension Bridge, to signify the peace between the lands. But secretly the cruel dictator of Kampfland sent his army onto the bridge, to invade the United States. There was a concealed runway, reached by ramps, under the main highway surface of the 3000-mile bridge; the Kampfland army used this route to approach undetected.

Neon the Unknown became aware of this invasion, and making use of his Dyna-Neonic Rays, Neon severed the bridge, then fixed the hanging ends of it it in mid-air, preventing a greater collapse. Blindly following orders, the infantry kept marching right over the edge and into the ocean, until a general ordered them to halt. Retiring to a tower chart room, three generals tried to figure out what had happened and what to do about it. Neon burst into this room, with some demands: the armies must turn back, the generals must sign a non-aggression pact with America, and they must form a peaceful trade agreement. The generals agreed to all of this.

Neon then flew to Washington, D.C. and dragooned the Secretary of War and the Secretary of State to draft up some war-ending agreements. He then herded these two officials, plus the President, into a limousine, and flew them to the broken end of the Transatlantic Suspension Bridge. But the treacherous Kampfland troops opened fire on them, prompting Neon to bind the troops in a brilliant neonic ring of flame, then he berated them for being mere pawns of their greedy generals, and urged them to give up warfare and seek peace. This worked, and one pacified soldier pointed out the new hiding place of the Kampflandic generals. Neon again burst in on the generals, and punched each of them out, preaching about peace the whole while, then he welded the bridge back together with his mystic rays.

All along the bridge, for a brief while, the soldiers and tourists joined hands in a firm understanding of peace and brotherhood. Also they tossed the generals off the off the side of the bridge.
