JLA #56 is an issue of the series JLA (Volume 1) with a cover date of September, 2001.
Synopsis for "Terror Incognita, Part 2: The Harvest"
Superman investigates a fire in Portland, Oregon and finds that it rapidly stopped because the air itself has been manipulated on a molecular level. Meanwhile, The Flash, Green Lantern Kyle Rayner, Plastic Man, and Wonder Woman try to hold back a violent mob who are spared from an atomic blast by GL's power ring. Someone is mind-controlling the group to lash out against the JLA and once The Flash finds them, Wonder Woman uses her Lasso of Truth to interrogate them but they are teleported away before she can learn anything more than that they speak Martian.
In the Justice League Watchtower, Batman debriefs on the White Martians and surmises that a recent series of ghost sightings was actually them. He teleports to Phoenix to investigate and save Martian Manhunter. He arrives at an office building they have converted into a slaughterhouse: they have abducted humans with latent psychic abilities and are feeding on their brains. Batman is detected and jumped by several White Martians but it gives the Manhunter a chance to escape from his makeshift prison.
He reveals that he accidentally unleashed the mental block placed on the White Martians[1] in their recent battle with The Id.[2] Batman teleports out before being killed but has to leave his teammate behind to fend for himself.
Superman enlists Firestorm to help him clean up the atmosphere but they are working too slowly to make a difference. He realizes that the Martians have set up towers to emit these special viral ions and as he goes to destroy one in the United States, he meets up with several Martians whom he thinks are his teammates.
