History

Circa 1700, Captain Morgan and his fleet attempted to invade the fortified town, and take it over to serve as his own base. The townspeople armed themselves and repelled the pirates, and Morgan did not return to that part of the old Spanish Main.

By the mid-twentieth century, these events were part of the colorful folklore of Hermoso, and annual reenactments of the pirate fight were a tourist-attracting gala event. In 1956, a gang of real pirates, acting under cover of the festival, seized some hostages and attempted to take over the town and loot it. Unfortunately for them, that year the famous Blackhawk Squadron had arrived to enjoy the show. There was some fighting, and some death-trapping and escaping, and some more fighting, and the pirates got mostly knocked into the ocean with their own explosives. The survivors were mostly arrested, and facing the Hermosan penal system, which still dealt with pirates the same way it had back in the 1700s.
