The Gulf of Mexico is an ocean basin and a marginal sea of the Atlantic Ocean, mostly surrounded by the North American continent.
History
In the 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th Centuries, the waters and coasts of the Gulf of Mexico were the scene of some violent clashes between the world naval powers of Britain, France, Spain, and later the United States.[citation needed]
