The Gotham River is a river in Gotham County that separates Gotham City from the mainland. It is the main water source for Gotham City and its inhabitants.
History
One winter, the troubled creature Blockbuster fell to the frozen waters of the Gotham River, after he saved a suicidal girl. He was presumed dead.[1]
Later, the Gotham River was used as an incubator for a number of experimental seeds created by Poison Ivy. Thanks to the sunlight and the algae on the river, the seeds transformed into plant-men and they crawled out of the river to join their creator.[2]
On another winter, the Gotham City Police Department dragged out of the waters a man encased in solid ice, unaware that the man inside was Mister Freeze and that he had chosen the cold waters to preserve his frosty shell while he hibernated.[3]
During the time of No Man's Land, the Gotham River contained mines as part of the city's quarantine from the rest of the country.[4]
Notes
- On the standardized map of Gotham City for Batman: No Man's Land, the Gotham River was the river separating the entire city from the mainland — Sommerset Township in the west and Bristol Township in the north.[5][6] In the Nolanverse redesign, however, it is the river separating Downtown Gotham from the Midtown island.
