Synopsis for "Twisted Fate"
Drug and art smugglers aboard a plane have just arrived back in the United States. After landing, the pilot shoots two of the three smugglers. Jared Stevens, the art smuggler, who was not shot, takes cover behind a seat and pulls a knife from his boot. One of the shot smugglers tosses a grenade at the pilot, who shoots the smuggler dead. Stevens hurls his knife at the pilot, picks up a bag of smuggled art and simultaneously hits the pilot with the bag and removes his knife from the man's shoulder. He then flees the plane, which blows up behind him.
Kent and Inza Nelson, the former wearers of the Helmet of Fate arrive and teleport themselves and Stevens to a tower in Salem, Massachusetts. In the meantime, two demons disguised as humans come in search of the helmet and Amulet of Anubis.
At the tower, Stevens finds himself bound with ropes. Kent explains that he and his wife once wore the helmet of Dr. Fate and that they became separated from it during the recent crisis in time. They traveled to Egypt to reclaim it, but Stevens had already taken it as part of his illegal art smuggling operation. The Nelsons try to reconnect with the helmet and Stevens pulls his knife from his boot and cuts his bonds. Two demons arrive and drain the life from the Kents.
Stevens plunges a knife into the chest of one of the demons and after discovering the blade dissolved away upon contact with the demon's skin, is knocked away by a backhand from the demon. He grabs an amulet from the bag he took from the plane and the demon grabs the hand holding the amulet, shattering it. The resulting explosion blows a hole in the tower.
Stevens picks himself up from the wreckage sees a vision of his future self battling a demon named Kingdom. Stevens retreats to his ex-wife's place, where he discovers he now has an ankh around his right eye.

Notes
- In October of 1994, all of the existing mainstream DC Comics titles released a special "0" issue to coincide with the Zero Hour crossover event. The purpose of the "0" issue was to reveal a previously unknown aspect of the title character's background. DC Titles under the Vertigo imprint were largely unaffected by Zero Hour and thus, no "0" issue specials were published for them.
