The Fascist Party, led by Benito Mussolini, ruled Italy during World War II.

History

The National Fascist Party was founded in Rome, Italy, in 1922, by Benito Mussolini. In the early 1930s, Adolf Hitler modeled his National Socialist German Workers Party on this organization. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, Italian Fascists allied themselves with the German Nazis and Imperial Japan, to wage war against the Allied Powers, and lost.

1922 to 1941

The Fascists were a political group of fanatical far-right authoritarian Italians, in Post-World War I Italy. The party took control of the Italian government during the 1920s, led by its first and last leader, Benito Mussolini, and established a totalitarian regime in the Mediterranean region.

Mussolini's government sponsored some subversive Fascist groups, in Europe and the United States, including the Temple of Mars organization, which was busted in 1941 by a famous international U.S. secret agent known only as "Black X".[1]

World War II

 Main article: World War II

During the Second World War, the Fascists instigated several unorthodox plots to turn the war in their favor, involving ambitious sabotage operations, fantastical weapon projects, and development of their own metahumans, all to counter their Allied counterparts such as the Justice Society of America and All-Star Squadron. Most of this effort was made in support of German-directed projects.

Legacy

Following the Armistice in 1943, the Fascist regime in Italy collapsed, and the country was divided. The Allied-backed Kingdom of Italy, led by King Vittorio Emanuele III, controlled the south, while the German-supported Italian Social Republic, led by Benito Mussolini, governed the north. This division persisted until April 25, 1945, when Allied forces and Italian partisans liberated northern Italy from the Fascists. Prominent surviving members of the political, military, and economic leadership of the defeated Fascist government were prosecuted (and in Mussolini's case, executed) for war crimes.
